In the eye of the 'Obamacare' storm?

President Obama’s health care reform effort plan had some good things in it, and some bad things in it. We’re already seeing the good parts of it – like the elimination of waiting periods and lifetime benefit caps – and it’s making a profound difference at street level.

Common Sense: Humor can be found everywhere

Finding humor in situations that aren’t necessarily meant to induce laughter often times will bring forth heartfelt chuckles. This is not a task easily mastered. An individual must first possess a sense of humor slightly off center.
It is a skill that can be nurtured, but is most effective when it is gifted by heredity.
I do my best to hone this skill, but it is a work in progress. There have been several instances lately where practice has resulted in at least a giggle for me.

Most of the time my memory is pretty good. Both long-term and short-term — if I concentrate on whatever it is I'm trying to recall.
There are exceptions, of course. One such incident occurred recently when, for whatever reason, I was trying unsuccessfully to remember a deceased pet's name.
In my mind's eye was a vivid image of the gorgeous, smoky grey feline of enormous proportions. He had beautiful eyes and the sweetest countenance. He was affectionate and a cat whose company I enjoyed immensely.
But for the life of me, I couldn't say his name.

As Americans, we can no longer stand by and ignore the fact that Congress continues to attack Social Security, inaccurately identifying it as an entitlement. An entitlement is defined as a government program targeting a particular section of the population to receive a specific social benefit.

Did she or didn't she? That is the question.
And, of course, I'm making reference to Beyonce's performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the inauguration of President Obama.
A huge controversy has erupted since it was revealed — perhaps that's too strong a word, so I'll rephrase — since it was implied that the singer was lip-syncing in her performance on Inauguration Day.
Some have come to her defense with the arguments that the weather was cold and it's difficult to sing well in an outdoor setting in the first place.

Deficit and debt are problems we all created

Who is to blame for our $16 trillion national debt? That’s easy, I am. So are you. So are our neighbors, friends, family members and community leaders. We, the taxpayers, allowed this reckless fiscal spending to get so far out of hand.
How many ways does federal spending touch your life? Whether it is through Social Security and Medicare, or a new stretch of I-30 asphalt, federal funding affects us all in some way or another.

One of the perks of being the editor of a small town newspaper is seeing what goes on behind the scenes of everyday life. There are voices out there that would have you believe the county is full of nothing but dirty politicians, meth addicts and shoplifters. Saline County is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. However, from the view of one who is privileged to see residents at their best every day, I say those who think poorly of our community have a very skewed perception of humanity.

Conservative Corner: Criminals don't obey laws

To be a criminal, by definition, is to be a lawbreaker. If a murderer breaks only one law in the commission of his felony, he is to the same degree a criminal as the man or woman who breaks 100 laws committing the murder.
To a rational lawmaker, then, the answer is not to make more laws, but to enforce the laws on the books, and to see to it that justice is done when someone breaks the law.

Common Sense: Less filling vs. tastes great

Accusations of bias in reporting are something that every reporter, editor and publisher will face. That's ok. The written word, while often times inspiring and dramatic, has several inherent flaws. As opposed to listening to the spoken word, reading the written word does not contain the intent of the writer which is determined by the filter of the reader.

Fully aware that in this day of "eating healthy" I'm not being politically correct here, I'm still confessing that I'm a big fan of french fries and catsup.
Or should I say french fries and ketchup. I never know.
I don't eat them often, but I like them and I haven't eliminated them from my diet. I just faithfully take my cholesterol-fighting pill every night and keep on enjoying the verboten fare.
