OUT OF THE BOX: Cats, manure and science projects

It’s that dreaded time of year again and all parents know what I’m
talking about: it’s science fair project time at all the schools. Any
day now my kids will be bringing home a note announcing this dreaded
annual event. They will also inform me that I “have to” to help them.
Great. I think I’d rather stick nails under my fingernails than come
up with one more idea for a science project.
Back when I was in school, we didn’t do projects for science fairs
until we were in the 9th grade. That seems perfectly reasonable to me.

What’s new, shiny and found all over?
No, it’s not the new iPhone. What’s found everywhere is -- everything! I see the “blanding” of America every day. You do, too, but may not even realize it. Blanding is the homogenization of our society and what it looks like. I am not making reference to race or skin color. Let me explain.

One of the things I value when dealing with a company is customer support services and do they listen when you call with a problem. Sprint has been my wireless phone carrier of choice for nigh onto 15 years – despite some of their delivery problems.
I felt through the years their pricing police were fair (as can be expected from this type company) and the fact they still offer unlimited data for a flat rate.

It's widely known that crisis situations tend to bring out the best in people.
Even the cranks and complainers often come forward to offer help when they see that the chips are down for others who truly need help.
This has certainly been true in many instances in recent days in this community and, I'm certain, throughout the state. Saline County was hit hard in the recent ice storm that caused extensive property damage.

It feels to me like we just celebrated the start of 2012, but here we are in 2013. I can't believe how quickly time passed.
A lot of great things happened for me this year. It's been so fun watching my 2-year-old son grow and figure things out. In some ways, it's been one of the best years of my life. Also, I got a job and have met some wonderful people. I've learned a lot and witnessed amazing acts of kindness.

Yesterday I read an article published by Business Insider, which
listed the 25 most dangerous cities in America. Believe it or not,
Little Rock was listed as number 6! Are you amazed? Because I sure
was. The first thing that amazed me was the fact that cities like
Chicago and New York City didn’t even make the list. I find that
pretty hard to believe. According to this article, every year the FBI
compiles a giant collection of data on crime in America. Local
precincts report everything from violent crimes to rape to art thefts.

First, I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year. Most folks wish prosperity for others and I follow that tradition, but the last few years have taught me that without health, prosperity and other goodies are hollow.
Also a shout-out to Mrs. Hahn (although I am almost 65, she will always be “Mrs. Hahn” because calling a former teacher by their first name seems disrespectful (grin). I saw in the paper she has hung up her weekly column – citing age and the need to spend more time with Mr. Hahn, also a retired teacher.

This year will start my 73rd year of life. At this time of year, however, I was still a tiny surprise waiting to be discovered by my mother. It would not be until July 1940 that I actually showed up on the 27th day as a healthy 12 pounder, ready to hit the ground running. It seems as if I haven’t stopped since.
