HASKELL — The Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals battled through a rare close contest Monday. With a championship looming, the Lady Cards defeated the Perryville Lady Mustangs 2-1 to move their winning streak to 12 straight and captured the squad’s second straight 5-3A District title.
“I am most proud of how we fought through a close game since we hadn’t played one in a while, so it was nice to see how we were going to do,” Head Coach Sammi Massey said. “It took both pitchers today and both did a great job. We got timely hits where we needed them and played defense when we had to.”
MALVERN – In two must-win games, the Bauxite Lady Miners punched their ticket to a 4A Regionals berth on Friday when they defeated the Robinson Senators 16-6 and the Central Arkansas Christian Lady Mustangs 11-3 at the 7-4A District Tournament in Malvern. The Lady Miners played Nashville, which Bauxite lost to 13-1 on April 25, in the semifinal game on Saturday with results in Monday’s edition.
“We’re in the Regional for sure now,” Bauxite Coach Sara Tew said. “It’s just a matter of where. If we beat Nashville, we’ll be a 1 or 2 seed.”
BENTON – Since Benton baseball Coach Mark Balisterri won his 300th game back in the 6A State Championship season of 2009, it hasn’t taken very long to hit that next milestone – 400 wins. In Balisterri’s 20th season coaching the Benton Panthers, he picked up No. 400 on March 29, 2014, in a 6-3 win over the Lakeside Rams.
BRYANT – The Bryant Lady Hornets held 7A/6A South Conference leader Sheridan Lady Jackets down for two innings, but Sheridan, which threatened the first two innings, finally broke through in the third inning against the Lady Hornets and stayed undefeated in the South with an 8-2 victory in Bryant on Tuesday.
WOODLAWN -- The Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals got a taste of its own medicine in the semifinals of the Woodlawn Tournament on Saturday after being held hitless. With Kristen Dempsey and LJ Hemlich usually being the ones to hold the opposition off the base paths, the Lady Cardinals couldn’t muster a hit but still beat Woodlawn 1-0 taking advantage of a walk and wild pitch in the process and advancing to the finals.
SHERIDAN – Just like their last game against Sheridan, the Benton Panthers got down early against the Yellowjackets on Friday night. But just like the last game, a 6-2 win over the Sheridan, the Panthers again came back and took a 7-2 win on Friday to take sole possession of second place in the 7A/6A South. Both teams were 7-2 in the South going into Friday’s contest as the Panthers improve to 8-2, a game behind the Bryant Hornets.
BEEBE – The Bryant Hornets used a complete team performance to add to their victory total for the season at the Beebe Badger Relays on Thursday. The Hornets scored in every event and totaled 162 points, which was 100 points ahead of runner-up Beebe (62 points).  Twenty-nine teams scored in the meet, with Searcy (47), Batesville (43), and Rivercrest (36) rounding out the top five teams. Â
BAUXITE – For the second consecutive year, the Bauxite Lady Miners are sending another player out with a college basketball scholarship. After all-time leading scorer Mary Crow signed with Arkansas Tech last year, 5-10 small forward Allison Tackett signed to play for the Southern Arkansas University Lady Muleriders on Thursday morning at Fred Dawson Gym in Bauxite.
HASKELL — The Harmony Grove Cardinals’ pitching has been really good and then not so much throughout the 2014 season. Winners of 10 games coming into Monday’s damp tilt with Fountain Lake, the Cardinals strolled away with their chins high and much-needed momentum, winning on a walk-off RBI single from Logan Clay to win 1-0.
