Miners looking to finish with a win

BAUXITE — The Bauxite Miners have had a hard time winning this season. Owners of a 1-8 overall record and still winless in 7-4A conference play, the Miners head into the the final week of the season with a trip to Nashville tonight.
Bauxite is coming off of a 62-7 loss to conference favorite Arkadelphia last week, a game in which the Miners totaled 226 yards of offense. Rooks led in passing yards with 150. The quarterback added a touchdown to his resume but also threw two interceptions. Junior wide receiver Ben Madison led with 10 catches for 93 yards and a TD in the loss.

Lady Panthers settle for runner-up in 6A

RUSSELLVILLE — For those watching in the Russellville High School gym, the 6A Volleyball State Championship match was one to remember. The Benton Lady Panthers fell 16-14 in the fifth and final set of the 6A state final to the Jonesboro Lady Hurricane on Saturday night to finish as runner-up in the state.
“It was a great game,” Benton Coach Brandy Chumley said. “If you go out with a loss, you want it to be a game like that. Hard in everything that they gave.”

Bryant shuts out Benton

BENTON -   With the painful sting of a recent loss still fresh in the air, the Saline County town of Benton played host to the ninth grade football team of cross county rival Bryant. Both team’s wanted this victory and the fans showed in resilient support of today’s youngsters and tomorrow’s War Memorial salt slinger’s.  Benton football would walk away with salt in their wounds once again this season taking a beating from Bryant 34-0.

Benton gets back at Belles

LITTLE ROCK – The Benton Lady Panthers ended their regular season defeating the Mount Saint Mary Belles Thursday night in Little Rock. Benton won its last four matches and 14 of the its past 15 matches with the Lady Panthers only loss coming to Conway in the Lady Cat Invitational two weeks ago. Benton swept every match in the 7A/6A South conference finishing 12-0 in league play and 20-3 overall.

Lady Hornets runner-up

PEARCY – Behind a third-place individual performance from senior Melinda Murdock, the Bryant Lady Hornets finished runner-up in the team competition at the Lake Hamilton Cross Country Invitational Saturday. Defending 7A state champion Rogers Heritage won the title with 37 points. Bryant finished with 90 points followed by Lake Hamilton (93), Mount St. Mary (148), LR Christian (161), Cabot (277), Watson Chapel (303), and Conway (307). There were 33 teams and 235 individual runners in the race.

Benton Jr.s take down No. 2 team

BENTON – The Benton Jr. High Lady Panthers defeated the No. 2 team in the conference, North Little Rock, in three games on Monday night in Benton. Benton won 25-21, 18-25 and 15-11.
"What a great match," Benton Coach Michelle Shoppach said. "We won because we played as a team and did things we have been working on all year; plus the cheer squad and the fan, mostly guys who acted like the Texas A&M yell leaders, were great. They provided lots of energy to take us over the edge for the victory."
Maggie Carson had 14 digs, Brooklyn Jensen had five kills and Lenzie Newman added four kills.

South Champions

BENTON – Talk about domination. The Benton Lady Panther volleyball team clinched the 7A/6A South conference with a 3-0 sweep of second place Lake Hamilton Lady Wolves on Tuesday night at Benton Arena. Benton won 25-20, 25-22 and cruised in the third set with a 25-14 win, and has swept every conference match this season with one to go against El Dorado at home on Senior Night Thursday.
“This is the first year we’ve gone undefeated and sweeping everyone,” Benton Coach Brandy Chumley said. “It’s never been done. This team is a really good team and that’s a testament to them.”

Fr. Panthers dominate previously unbeaten

BENTON – The Benton Freshman Panthers had lost it’s three previous games before undefeated Conway Blue came to Panther Stadium on Thursday night. Benton responded to the 5-0 Blue team in a big way, not allowing Conway a first down all game in a 24-7 victory to improve the Fr. Panthers to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the Central Arkansas Junior High Conference.

Lady Panthers win again

BENTON – The Benton Lady Panthers improved to 16-2 overall and 10-0 in the 7A/6A South conference with another sweep of a conference opponent on Thursday at Benton Arena. The Lady Panthers defeated Texarkana 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-14) and have swept every South opponent this season.

Freshman Eoff boiling at Purdue

BENTON – To say Austin Eoff is having success his freshman season so far as a Purdue Boilermaker would be an understatement. Eoff, a four-time All-State selection and three-time individual state champion for the Benton Panthers, has taken the Boilermakers by storm this season. Eoff has led Purdue in all three events this season, giving the Boilermakers no worse than a fourth-place finish.
