Defense does it for 7-0 Panthers

December 6, 2012

CABOT – The Benton Panthers have a 4:30 p.m. Saturday date in the Cabot Pre-Holiday tournament final after defeating the Hot Springs Lakeside Rams 52-42 in the semifinal round on Wednesday night in Cabot. The Panthers are looking to win their second consecutive tournament in less than a week as they won the Searcy Bank Classic this past Saturday.
It was a low-scoring affair in the first half as the Panthers committed a season-high 17 turnovers against the Rams, but Benton played solid defense in holding an 18-13 lead at the half.

Bryant withstands pressure

December 3, 2012

The Bryant Lady Hornets overcame 19 turnovers to defeat the Maumelle Lady Hornets 39-27 in the second round of the OrthoArkansas Tournament at Central Arkansas Christian on Friday night. The Lady Hornets played well defensively, holding Maumelle to just 22 percent shooting, while hitting double that, 44 percent.
"We executed in spurts," Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. "You still have to be able to execute with the pressure and getting into the passing lanes. I'm proud of our kids. They have some good talent over there."

Benton Panther junior forward Josh Bowling scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Panthers' 74-54 victory over the Wynne Yellowjackets on Friday night in the Searcy Bank Classic. Benton defeated Greenbrier 66-41 in the first round on Thursday.
The Panthers (4-0) also shot 29 of 33 from the free-throw line and led 31-18 at the half.
"The kids did a good job of getting the ball in to him," Benton Coach Chris Nail said of the Panthers finding Bowling. "[Wynne] played a 1-2-2 zone and the middle was open. He hurt them in the middle of the zone."

The Hornets led 32-22 at the half, but Maumelle got within 36-30 after Kendall Donnerson got an offensive rebound and put back. Senior Hornet guard CJ Rainey responded with a layup while fouled and hit the free throw to push the lead back to nine.

Lady Panthers rout in 2nd round

SEARCY – After an ugly 37-28 opening-round win over Batesville in the Searcy Bank Classic, the Benton Lady Panthers cleaned their play up to destroy the Wynne Lady Jackets 54-26 in the second round on Friday night. Benton committed 22 turnovers against Batesville, but came out with more energy on Friday night.
"We played with a lot more enthusiasm and a lot more urgency," Benton Coach Jerry Chumley said. "We jumped on them. By far our best quarter of scoring. We were ready to play."

Slow start turns into blowout

November 28, 2012

The Benton Freshman Panthers, behind 13 points from Jackson Oulch and 12 points from Clay Anderson, defeated Cabot North 39-21 Monday night. The win improves Benton’s season record to 7-1.
“It’s always nice to win the home opener,” Panther Head Coach David Torres said. “We got off to a bit of a slow start, but we’re able to speed up the game halfway through the first quarter. Cabot North is a big, long team and we were able to get them into an up-tempo game.”

Bauxite wins it ugly

November 24, 2012

BAUXITE – A hot start on offense in the first half and stingy play on defense in the second half helped push the Bauxite Lady Miners (4-2) past the Pottsville Apaches by a score of 50-38 on Tuesday night.
Despite the win, head coach Joshua Harrison still felt his team didn’t play their best ball.
“It was an ugly game to say the least,” Harrison said. “Pottsville is a good team who is constantly in the 4A state tournament. We looked sluggish tonight. We didn’t execute like we normally would, but I thought defensively we played pretty hard.”
