Miners make history, dominate field

JESSIEVILLE – The Bauxite Miners won their first-ever overall team track meet in the Senior High Lion Relays on Thursday in Jessieville. The Miners blistered the field scoring 129 points, outdistancing second-place Caddo Hills (80.5) by almost 50 points. The Lady Miners tied with Caddo Hills for third at the meet with 66 points, behind first-place Jessieville (125) and second-place Magnet Cove (81).

Cards take tourney title with shutout

POYEN — No matter how the rest of the season goes for the Harmony Grove Cardinals, the 2014 season will go down as a championship year. After beating Cutter Morning Star and Magnet Cove in the first two games of the Poyen Tournament last week, the Cardinals flew past 5-3A conference rival Glen Rose 5-0 to capture the hardware.
“It was a great win,” Head Coach Brandon Mynhier said. “You want to win against Glen Rose anytime you can and they are going to always put a great team on the field. We just went out and tried to win a championship. It was a fun time for all of us.”

Muilenburg’s 1-hitter more than enough for Benton

BENTON -- A year after playing every game with an extremely heavy heart, the Benton Lady Panthers revisited that emotion in full with the first game of the second annual Drew Melton: Forever Young Tournament on Friday.
With Wynne as the first opponent up, Benton took care of business, winning 6-0 after a second straight dominating performance from pitcher Stevi Muilenburg. The senior allowed just one hit over five innings, striking out five and walking one.

Panthers win in extras

BENTON – It took extra innings to do it, but the Benton Panthers came away with a 3-2 victory over the defending 5A state champion Arkadelphia Badgers on Friday at Panthers Field. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 2-2 game, Benton junior Cameron Spivey’s hard-hit grounder to second base scored courtesy runner Sam Baker when the throw to the catcher was low and the umpire called a trap against the ground for the winning run.

Hogs salvage series

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After losing 2-1 and 1-0 heartbreakers Friday and Saturday to the Florida Gators, Arkansas flogged Florida 9-3 Sunday in the final game of the SEC season-opening series at Florida's McKethan Stadium.
The Razorbacks take 9-7 overall and 1-2 in the SEC records back to Baum Stadium for 6:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. nonconference games Tuesday and Wednesday against Grambling State before hosting Alabama in next weekend's three-game SEC series.
Florida finished the series 13-7 overall and 2-1 in the SEC.

Hurricane blows over Benton again

JONESBORO – Making the 6A State Tournament semifinals their second consecutive year against the Jonesboro Golden Hurricane, the result was almost exactly the same as last season as the Benton Panthers fell 63-53 on Tuesday afternoon at Jonesboro High School. The Hurricane defeated Benton last year 61-51 in the semis at Greenwood.
“They had depth,” Benton Coach Dwaine Fishburn said of Jonesboro. “I could see that at the end. We got into some early foul trouble. Our game plan, early on, was working really well.”

Cards stun Earle, 1 away from finals

CHARLESTON -- As if Harmony Grove basketball couldn’t get any more exciting, the senior boys proved Monday that there is no quit in them when it comes to post-season play. Winner over No. 4 Fordyce in Round 1 of the 3A State Tournament on Saturday, the Cardinals came out Monday with a win-or-go-home scenario against the No. 1 Earle Bulldogs.
Looking to take a bit of the bite out of the Dogs, Harmony Grove (25-7) used more stellar defense and good guard play to upset Earle 64-61 sending the ‘Dogs out with an early exit.

Benton falls in quarterfinals

JONESBORO – Leading 33-29 after consecutive Braxton Chumley steals and layups late in the third quarter, the South No. 2 seed Benton Lady Panthers could muster just six more points the rest of the way and the East No. 3 seed Searcy Lady Lions ended Benton’s season with a 53-39 victory in the quarterfinals of the 6A State Tournament in Jonesboro Monday night.

Tough Contest: Bryant top 10 at state

LITTLE ROCK – The Bryant Lady Hornets finished sixth and the Hornets eighth, while both Benton boys and girls took 16th in the 2014 7A/6A Arkansas State High School Swim Championships this past Friday with Catholic High School hosting. Bentonville ran away with the state meet with the girls scoring 471 points to top second-place Conway (253), and the boys topping Little Rock Central by 149 points, 409 - 260.
