The Ins and Outs of the HOF

August 3, 2013

Baseball's Hall of Fame Induction was last weekend and it was the first time since 1997 that the Baseball Writer's Association of America didn't vote a player in. The HOF Veteran's Committee voted umpire Hank O'Day, baseball pioneer Jacob Ruppert and pre-1900's catcher Deacon White. Congratulations to those guys which got in I've never heard of, but this column isn't about them. I'm looking toward next year when there will be three first-ballot HOFers in Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas.

Familiar faces for the interim

August 2, 2013

BENTON – It will be an interim reunion of sorts when Benton Panther Assistant Coach Dwaine Fishburn and Freshman Panther Head Coach David Torres begin the basketball season. After six seasons as Benton’s head basketball coach, Chris Nail took the assistant principal position. Fishburn was named interim head basketball coach and Torres was named the interim assistant coach at the Benton School Board Meeting on Tuesday night. The duo also were interim coaches for the Panthers for the 2006-2007 seasons before Nail’s arrival.

Everett blanks Gwatney, advances to final

July 31, 2013

BRYANT – The Bryant Everett Black Sox advanced to the championship game with an 11-0 win over Jacksonville Gwatney on Monday in the American Legion Junior Regional Tournament at Bryant Hornet Field. Bryant moves on to face Texarkana, Texas, for the tournament championship needing just one more win to secure the title.
“This might have been the best team win all year long,” Bryant Coach Tyler Brown said. “We came out and we hit the ball well and had a plan at the plate. [We] played great defense which is always a plus and had great pitching. Great team win.”

Bryant Everett gets help in rout

July 31, 2013

BRYANT – The Bryant Everett Black Sox took advantage of 10 walks and seven errors in an 11-2 win over the Atlanta, Texas, Rebels on Saturday morning in the American Legion Junior Regional Tournament at Bryant High School.
Despite four errors and two unearned runs allowed, the Rebels were down just 3-2 after five and a half innings, but walks and errors came back to haunt Atlanta once again. Dalton Holt led the bottom of the fifth off with a single to left field, reached third on two wild pitches and scored on a passed ball to make it 4-2.

The DH is the devil, or is it?

July 29, 2013

The designated hitter is celebrating its 40th year in existence this season and I'm going to come out and say it. I hate the designated hitter. Hate it, hate it, hate it. And I'm not a hateful person. But to threaten the designated hitter to my beloved National League is going too far. Yes, there are rumblings inside Major League Baseball that the DH is coming to the NL within possibly 10 years.

Benton, Bryant combine for 12 errors in 14-11 final

July 22, 2013

SHERIDAN – After combining for one hit and one run against the Bryant Black Sox in two regular-season meetings, the Benton McClendon’s put up 16 hits and 11 runs on the Sox on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as Bryant took a 14-11 win over Benton in the second round of the Zone 4 Tournament in Sheridan.

Where Buffalo roam: Jack James signs with ABC

July 18, 2013

BENTON – Former Benton Panther second baseman Jack James will be joining Panther teammate Justin Vincent at Arkansas Baptist College next baseball season as James signed his letter of intent to play for the Buffaloes on Tuesday afternoon at Benton Arena.

Black Sox take down McClendon's

July 18, 2013

BRYANT – The Benton McClendon’s Appliances and Bryant Black Sox finished up their respective regular seasons on Tuesday night at Hornets Field in Bryant, with the Sox coming away with an 8-1 victory. Bryant starter Tryce Schalchlin and reliever Ozzie Hurt combined on a one-hitter against the McClendon’s.
“It’s been like that all year,” Bryant Coach Darren Hurt said. “Our pitching has just been solid. No matter who we throw up there, we’re six deep. They all give us quality innings and it wasn’t any different [Tuesday] night.”

Finals-bound

July 17, 2013

HOT SPRINGS – After suffering their lone loss on the season and scoring just four runs in two games on Sunday, the Bryant Everett Black Sox made up for their lack of scoring with a 19-0 win over host Lakeside – advancing them to the State Tournament in Cabot – and an 11-2 win over the team which gave Everett its only loss, the Little Rock Cobras, in the Zone 4 Tournament at Lakeside High School.

McClendon's split DH vs. Vipers

July 12, 2013

LITTLE ROCK – There was quite a drastic difference in the Benton McClendon’s Appliances’ games against the Little Rock Vipers on Wednesday night at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock. The McClendon’s split a doubleheader, falling 12-0 to the Vipers in Game 1, but rebounding and taking the second game 3-1 behind an excellent pitching performance from Wesley Ramsey.
