Youth and athleticism

August 23, 2013

BRYANT – What a difference a year makes. After winning the 7A/6A South conference with an undefeated record, the Bryant Lady Hornets volleyball team returns one player with extended varsity experience as Bryant graduated eight seniors last season. This year, the Lady Hornets have no seniors.
“We definitely look different,” Bryant Coach Beth Solomon said. “Last year, our entire varsity, other than Abby Staton, were all seniors. This year, we look a little bit different, but we’re still as aggressive. We’re going to play just as intense.

August 22, 2013

BRYANT – The Bryant Lady Hornets volleyball team began the 2013 season with a 3-0 sweep of the Arkansas Baptist Lady Eagles on Tuesday night at Bryant Gym. The Lady Hornets were down 2-0 in the first set before taking the second-year program Lady Eagles 25-8. Bryant would win 25-4 in the second set and 25-8 in the third.
“The biggest thing from tonight was definitely our serving,” Bryant Coach Beth Solomon said. “Savannah Shelton led the team with 20-plus aces tonight.”

Locals leading charge

August 17, 2013

BENTON – Before the Arkansas Razorbacks hired Bret Bielema this past December, rumors swirled about who may take over as the head coach after a horrific 4-8 season in 2012. Super Bowl-winning coach and current Monday Night Football announcer Jon Gruden was included in the rumor-mill and three Razorbacks fans attempted to serenade Gruden to the Razorbacks’ helm with their version of Beatles’ classic “Hey Jude” with “Hey Grude.”

Have you heard of this Mike Trout guy? You probably have if you’ve been watching any type of baseball at all the past two years. Trout is the centerfielder for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and he’s pretty good.

Tiger’s 79th win proof he is the best

August 8, 2013

What defines an athlete as “the best of all time?” Is it the number of championship rings or trophies? What about the number of overall wins or pure dominance of a single superstar? While picking out the best baseball or football star may be hard to choose, Michael Jordan has the title in the NBA and Tiger Woods deserves it in the PGA.
Since winning his first few majors as a young professional, Woods has been compared to the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer. While some agree he is already the best to ever play, the critics still outweigh the opposition heavily.

The Ins and Outs of the HOF

August 3, 2013

Baseball's Hall of Fame Induction was last weekend and it was the first time since 1997 that the Baseball Writer's Association of America didn't vote a player in. The HOF Veteran's Committee voted umpire Hank O'Day, baseball pioneer Jacob Ruppert and pre-1900's catcher Deacon White. Congratulations to those guys which got in I've never heard of, but this column isn't about them. I'm looking toward next year when there will be three first-ballot HOFers in Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas.

Familiar faces for the interim

August 2, 2013

BENTON – It will be an interim reunion of sorts when Benton Panther Assistant Coach Dwaine Fishburn and Freshman Panther Head Coach David Torres begin the basketball season. After six seasons as Benton’s head basketball coach, Chris Nail took the assistant principal position. Fishburn was named interim head basketball coach and Torres was named the interim assistant coach at the Benton School Board Meeting on Tuesday night. The duo also were interim coaches for the Panthers for the 2006-2007 seasons before Nail’s arrival.

Everett blanks Gwatney, advances to final

July 31, 2013

BRYANT – The Bryant Everett Black Sox advanced to the championship game with an 11-0 win over Jacksonville Gwatney on Monday in the American Legion Junior Regional Tournament at Bryant Hornet Field. Bryant moves on to face Texarkana, Texas, for the tournament championship needing just one more win to secure the title.
“This might have been the best team win all year long,” Bryant Coach Tyler Brown said. “We came out and we hit the ball well and had a plan at the plate. [We] played great defense which is always a plus and had great pitching. Great team win.”

Bryant Everett gets help in rout

July 31, 2013

BRYANT – The Bryant Everett Black Sox took advantage of 10 walks and seven errors in an 11-2 win over the Atlanta, Texas, Rebels on Saturday morning in the American Legion Junior Regional Tournament at Bryant High School.
Despite four errors and two unearned runs allowed, the Rebels were down just 3-2 after five and a half innings, but walks and errors came back to haunt Atlanta once again. Dalton Holt led the bottom of the fifth off with a single to left field, reached third on two wild pitches and scored on a passed ball to make it 4-2.
