Coach will take ugly loss

BENTON – Despite a less-than-stellar performance, the Benton Panthers came away with a 50-44 victory over the Sheridan Yellowjackets in 7A/6A South conference play on Tuesday night in Benton Arena. It was the Panthers’ 12th consecutive victory and Benton is ranked seventh in the state in the Hog Country Top 10 poll.
“I did not think we played well at all tonight,” Benton Coach Chris Nail said. “We had dead legs all night. We didn’t have our usual motion. Sheridan played good. You can’t say it was all us, but I didn’t think we played well.

Cardinals upend rival, win 2nd straight

GLEN ROSE - When the month of February rolls around, there is just one thing on the mind of high school basketball teams; postseason play. For the Harmony Grove Cardinals, the 5-3A 2012-13 district tournament looms in the near future.
On Tuesday, the Cardinals traveled just up the street to Glen Rose for an intense rivalry-renewing game with the Beavers. After busting a four-game skid with a win over eStem on Friday, Harmony Grove added a second straight win Tuesday, defeating Glen Rose handily, 75-55.

Hornets 'lazy' in loss

BRYANT – Sophomore K.J. Hill poured in 20 points, Greyson Giles added 10, but their efforts fell short as the Bryant Hornets fell to the visiting Little Rock Fair War Eagles 56-48 on Tuesday night.
Despite outscoring Fair 38-35 in the second half, Bryant Head Coach Mike Abrahamson said his team wasn’t ready from the opening tip.
“We didn’t want this one for some reason,” Abrahamson said. “We weren’t ready to play.”

Bauxite buries Ashdown in 2nd half

BAUXITE – Sophomore Ben Madison scored 16 points, senior Tyler Hill added 12 points, and the Bauxite Miners won its third consecutive conference game with a 46-37 victory over the visiting Ashdown Panthers.
In the first half, both teams came out and struggled to put the ball through the basket. After the first quarter of play, Bauxite (12-5, 6-1 conference) led Ashdown 8-7. Three-pointers by Madison and junior Hunter Holder were the only field goals in the quarter for the Miners, leaving Head Coach Mark Smith frustrated with his team’s offensive efficiency.

Cardinals run out of time

FOUNTAIN LAKE - After finishing the first half of conference play at 5-2, the Harmony Grove Cardinals have done a total 180 since getting back to work. After having their return game against Perryville canceled due to inclement weather, the Cardinals went on the road to Mayflower and lost 70-57. On Tuesday, the Cardinals continued to spin downward, falling to Fountain Lake on the road 59-54.

Lady Miners pound Panthers

BAUXITE – Behind 16 points from senior Mary Crow and another 16 by junior Amy Etheridge, the Bauxite Lady Miners handled the Ashdown Panthers in convincing fashion with a 64-45 win Tuesday night.
Junior Allison Tackett also poured in 13 points and senior Makayla Blanchett chipped in eight points, as Bauxite (13-5, 6-1 conference) continues its strong conference play.
“I thought offensively we got in a pretty good rhythm,” Head Coach Josh Harrison said. “We did a pretty good job of moving the ball and shot pretty well tonight.”

Hornets down Wolves

BRYANT- The Bryant Hornets made nine 3-pointers in a 65-52 victory over the Lake Hamilton Wolves on Tuesday night. The Bryant Hornets improve to 13-7 (2-4) on the year.
“We’re going to have to be a team that does shoot it well,” Bryant Coach Mike Abrahamson said. “It’s hard work. There’s a comfort level out there that we haven’t seen all year in terms of our shooters.”

Duo brings Benton back

BENTON – It didn’t look promising for the Benton Lady Panthers on Tuesday night, but they remained undefeated in 7A/6A South conference play with a 33-29 victory over the El Dorado Lady Wildcats at Benton Arena. Besides a 3-2 lead at the 5:54 mark of the first quarter, the Lady Panthers wouldn’t lead again until sophomore guard Braxton Chumley hit a 3-pointer with 4:41 left in the fourth to give Benton a 28-27 lead.

Panthers rout Razorbacks

BENTON – The Benton Panthers had very little problem to improving to 4-0 in the 7A/6A South conference when they trounced the Arkansas High (Texarkana) Razorbacks 51-23 in a make-up game on Thursday night. Originally scheduled for Tuesday night, the game was postponed to Thursday due to inclement weather.

Yellowjackets get final sting

BRYANT - If the 7A/6A conference season wasn’t already a nightmare for the 0-3 Bryant Hornets, Wednesday was. After having to postpone its Tuesday game with Sheridan due to inclement weather, Bryant rescheduled and took the floor Wednesday in hopes of ending its already disappointing conference showing.
The Sheridan Yellowjackets brought their size, speed and athleticism to the Hornets Nest and flew away victorious. Despite losing a large first half lead, the Jackets regained momentum to begin the second half and put the game away for good, winning 61-56.
