Fr. Panthers rout Cards JV in tourney

January 3, 2013

BENTON – It is not too often that there is a basketball game played with two coaches with the same ties to both schools playing. But for Benton Freshmen Panthers and Harmony Grove Cardinals’ junior varsity, Wednesday’s opening-round match of the Benton Classic had just that.
First-year head coach Dexter Hendrix, a 2006 Benton graduate returned to the same floor that he played on as he led his team into the Benton Arena to battle Panther Head Coach David Torres. Torres was the longtime senior girl’s coach at Harmony Grove before moving to Benton in the early 2000s.

CARLISLE - It is hard to believe that Head Coach Mark Smith and the rest of the Bauxite Miners could have envisioned a better start to the season than what they have. Sitting at 7-4 overall is not bad, but an impressive 3-0 start in 7-4A conference play has the program smiling already this young season.

After a hard and intense practice session just hours before getting on the bus, the Cardinals took care of business, beating DeWitt in a 57-27 rout of their own.

FORT SMITH – After losing to Texas High 76-66 in the second round of the Coca Cola Classic in Fort Smith on Friday, the Bryant Hornets salvaged a 1-2 showing in the tourney with a 56-49 win over Subiaco Academy on Saturday afternoon.
“We were aggressive and got to the foul line, so that was good,” Bryant Coach Mike Abrahamson said. “We shot the ball a little bit better from the outside, which really helps. We defended a little bit better than we had been.”

HOT SPRINGS – After the inclement weather that shut down central Arkansas the day after Christmas, the Spa City Shootout commenced a day later than the original Thursday start. With almost 10 inches of snow blanketing the state in some areas, the snow must have covered the basketball rims at Summit Arena in Hot Springs on Friday as the Hot Springs Lady Trojans bested the Bryant Lady Hornets 46-34, where both teams shot a combined 30 percent from the field.
