Hornets salvage tourney with win

FORT SMITH – After losing to Texas High 76-66 in the second round of the Coca Cola Classic in Fort Smith on Friday, the Bryant Hornets salvaged a 1-2 showing in the tourney with a 56-49 win over Subiaco Academy on Saturday afternoon.
“We were aggressive and got to the foul line, so that was good,” Bryant Coach Mike Abrahamson said. “We shot the ball a little bit better from the outside, which really helps. We defended a little bit better than we had been.”
The Hornets (11-3) lost to the No. 1 team in the state North Little Rock in the first round and to Texas High in Round 2.

Davidson has monster game

HOT SPRINGS – After the inclement weather that shut down central Arkansas the day after Christmas, the Spa City Shootout commenced a day later than the original Thursday start. With almost 10 inches of snow blanketing the state in some areas, the snow must have covered the basketball rims at Summit Arena in Hot Springs on Friday as the Hot Springs Lady Trojans bested the Bryant Lady Hornets 46-34, where both teams shot a combined 30 percent from the field.

Benton gets back on track with rout of Hot Springs

HOT SPRINGS – The Benton Panthers took care of business on the road with a 78-47 victory over the Hot Springs Trojans Monday night in Hot Springs.
Senior point guard Bryan Torres scored a season-high 18 points, hitting 3 of 6 from 3-point range and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line to pace the Panthers.
“I thought Bryan Torres played his best game of the year,” Benton Coach Chris Nail said. “He shot the ball real well last night.”

Lady Panthers fall in close contest

HOT SPRINGS – After starting out in an 11-0 hole to begin the game, the Benton Lady Panthers fought back, but fell 49-47 to the Hot Springs Lady Trojans on Monday night in Hot Springs.
Tied at 47-47, Lady Trojan Berniezha Tidwell hit a 7-foot runner with four seconds remaining. After a timeout, the Lady Panthers set up a play, but couldn’t get a shot off to fall to 6-3 on the season.

Panthers fall for 1st time this season

SPRINGDALE –The Benton Panthers lost for the first time this year dropping to the Springdale Bulldogs 61-56 in Springdale on Friday night.
“The game was pretty simple,” Benton Coach Chris Nail said. “We got off to a really slow start. They’re a really good team. We just kind of dug ourselves a hole there.”
The Panthers (8-1) were down 17-7 after the first quarter and 32-22 at the half, but made a run in the third quarter to cut it to within three points going into the fourth quarter. Benton was within one before falling by five points.

Hornets win ugly game

BRYANT – The Bryant Hornets hosted the Russellville Cyclones on Tuesday night and sent them back home with a 53-43 defeat as the Hornets capitalized on the Cyclones’ aggressiveness. Bryant made 25 of 32 (78 percent) free throws opposed to Russellville’s 5 of 8.
“It was probably the ugliest game I’ve ever been associated with in terms of offense,” Bryant Coach Mike Abrahamson said. “We both played really good defense, we both had each other scouted well. Both sets of kids did a great job of taking away our offensive looks.

Bauxite wins conference opener

BAUXITE – The Bauxite Lady Miners started 7-4A conference play right with a 52-41 win over the Nashville Lady Scrappers on Tuesday night at Fred Dawson Gym in Bauxite. A slow first half led to a stagnant game early, but the Lady Miners woke up in the second half.
Bauxite (8-4, 1-0 7-4A) jumped to a 10-2 lead to begin the game, but the Lady Scrappers scrapped their way back to make it a 13-8 Nashville deficit at the end of one. The Lady Miners would go into a lull in the second quarter getting outscored 10-5 resulting in a tie, 18-18, game at the half.

BAUXITE – The Bauxite Miners played an all-around game to open their 7-4A conference season with a 49-33 victory over the Nashville Scrappers at Fred Dawson Gym on Tuesday night.
“We played really well,” Bauxite Coach Mark Smith said. “Probably the best we’ve played this season. It was a good time to start out with the first conference game.”
The Miners (5-4, 1-0 7-4A) didn’t get off to a good start as the Scrappers couldn’t miss leading 14-3 early and finished the first quarter with a 16-7 lead over the Miners.

Razorbacks coach makes first hire

FAYETTEVILLE - Bret Bielema’s first official Arkansas Razorbacks hire is the coach coordinating Bielema’s last two defenses at Wisconsin.
Chris Ash, Wisconsin’s defensive coordinator in 2011 and 2012 and Wisconsin’s defensive backfield coach in 2010, becomes Arkansas’ defensive coordinator, new Arkansas Coach Bielema announced Tuesday.
Bielema, the Wisconsin Badgers’ head coach from 2006-2012 and their defensive coordinator in 2004 and 2005, was hired last week to succeed John L. Smith, the interim coach in 2012 after former Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino was fired last spring.
