Lady Panthers end season with loss in quarters

GREENWOOD – The South No. 1 seed Benton Lady Panthers were down 7-0 early and never recovered in falling to a deep East No. 4 seed Greenwood Lady Bulldogs team 53-37 in the second round of the 6A State Tournament in Greenwood on Friday night.
Three different players for the Lady Bulldogs scored the first seven points before Benton senior Madi Brooks took a pass from sophomore Braylee Landreth for a layup for the Lady Panthers’ first points with 2:26 left in the first.

Statebound: Lady Miners reach 4A State Tourney

ARKADELPHIA - After winning the 7-4A district tournament, the Bauxite Lady Miners rolled into the South Region Regional tournament as the No. 2 seed with a chance to make history.
After a tough first half, the Lady Miners took control and blew past Dumas 51-41 in the opening round, advancing to the 4A state tournament for the first time since joining the conference in 2011. Bauxite made state in 2010 when it was a member of the 5-3A.

Panther Swim has exciting 1st year

BENTON - The Benton High School Panther swim team was in the water Tuesday evening for one of the last practices they will have before the Arkansas State Swim and Dive meet on Saturday after the boys finished third (246 points) in the South District Meet championship on Friday, Feb. 8, and the girls (142.5) finished fifth. This is the first official year for the team as a part of the Benton High School athletics department, even though there has been a swim team representing the Benton Panthers for the last six years.

Hornets look forward to State Championships

The Bryant Hornet swim team finished their 2012-2013 swim season at the South District Championship held earlier this month at Bishop Park. At the conclusion of the meet, the Hornets and Lady Hornets finished in first place and were named the South District champions for the fourth year in a row. The Hornets scored 418 points at the meet, with second-place Magnolia coming in with 260 points and third-place Benton with 246. The Lady Hornets finished with 474 points to second-place Magnolia's 259 points.

Panthers Perfect

BENTON – The Benton Panthers finished off their historic season with a 78-69 beating of the Pine Bluff Zebras in 7A/6A South conference action on Tuesday night in Benton Arena on Senior Night. The Panthers finished off the regular season with a school-record 25 wins against just two losses. The Panthers, which clinched conference last Tuesday, were undefeated in the South with a 14-0 record and will play East No. 8 Searcy as the South No. 1 seed. Tipoff is 8:30 p.m. at Greenwood High School.

Lady Panthers gearing up for season without Drew Melton

Last year’s Benton Lady Panther softball team finished the season with a 30-3 showing overall, 14-0 in 6A South conference action and a state semifinal loss to Russellville.
Heading into the offseason, Benton had one thing on its mind: winning a state title in 2013. The leader, and most outspoken Lady Panther pushing the campaign, was defensive standout and senior Drew Melton.

Cardinals earn regional bid

LITTLE ROCK - For a team that is built like a powerhouse and an offensive force to be reckoned with, the Harmony Grove Cardinals took a different approach to its game on Thursday night. Playing in the quarterfinals of the 5-3A district tournament in Little Rock, the Cardinals took Head Coach Dexter Hendrix’s game plan and executed it flawlessly, beating Fountain Lake 33-27 to advance to the semis today against Episcopal.

Benton bowling takes 3rd, 4th in State Tourney

FORT SMITH – After both the Benton boys and girls bowling teams finished second to Cabot in the 7A/6A Central conference tournament, Benton went to Bowling World in Fort Smith for the 7A/6A State Tournament on Monday. The Panther girls took third place and the boys fourth, while Cabot boys and girls took first in state as well. Bentonville came in second for the girls, and Fayetteville and Mountain Home were the teams before the Benton boys.

Bauxite regional bound

BAUXITE – Lady Miners head coach Joshua Harrison and his Bauxite Miners are no strangers to the Nashville Scrappers, playing each other nine times in the last three years, including a narrow 35-34 win at Nashville in January.
Wednesday’s 7-4A district matchup proved to be just as entertaining as the Miners escaped with a 61-57 win over Nashville, clinching a spot in the regional tournament.
“I know the type of team Nashville is,” Harrison said. “They fell from fourth to sixth [in conference] but they’re a team full of athletes.”

BRYANT- The Bryant Hornets used a late fourth-quarter run in a 52-35 victory over the Texarkana Razorbacks on Tuesday night. The Bryant Hornets improve to 17-9 (6-6) on the year. The Hornets have won 6 of their past 8 games after starting the 7A/6A South 0-4.
“We hit a few shots early,” Bryant coach Mike Abrahamson said. “We made some plays.”
