Lady Miners survive scare

MALVERN – It wasn’t pretty, but the Bauxite Lady Miners extended their season with a 55-51 win over the Maumelle Lady Hornets Wednesday in the 7-4A district tournament in Malvern. The Lady Miners now have No. 2 seed and host Malvern tonight.

The Lady Miners (19-9, 11-4 7-4A), the No. 3 seed, looked as if they were going to have smooth sailing when they got up 21-8 after two Mary Crow free throws with 1:29 left in the first half, and leading 23-11 at halftime, but the third quarter and freshman Kamry Orr had other designs.

Lady Panthers cruise to 14th straight

BENTON – The Benton Lady Panthers had no problem in dispensing the J.A. Fair Lady War Eagles 58-17 Tuesday night in 6A South conference action at Benton Arena. The Lady Panthers ho-hummed their way to the team’s 14th consecutive victory and improved to 12-0 in the 6A South.

“Fair is way down,” Benton Coach Jerry Chumley said. “We got through and didn’t have any injuries so mission accomplished.”

Lady Cardinals advance to second round of tourney

LITTLE ROCK – The Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals came into Tuesday night’s opening round of the 5-3A South District Tournament in control of their own fate. There was only one problem standing in their way and that was the Lady Eagles from Cutter Morning Star, a team Harmony Grove narrowly escaped with a win on the road just a few days ago.

Beavers fall in nail-biter

LITTLE ROCK – The Glen Rose Beavers came into the first round of the 5-3A District Tournament at Episcopal (Little Rock) with nothing to lose and everything to gain as they tried to play spoiler and keep their season alive. But, there would be no fireworks on the Glen Rose side as Fountain Lake narrowly got past the Beavers 44-42.

Bryant makes a splash at meets

LITTLE ROCK – The Bryant Lady Hornets swim team finished in second place at the Central Arkansas Invitational swim and dive meet this past Saturday. The Lady Hornets scored 267 points behind Conway High School’s 535 points. The Bryant boys finished in sixth place with a total of 158, the Benton Panthers finished in 13th place (29.5) and the Lady Panthers came in 12th with 41 points.

Cardinals escape nail-biter

HASKELL - The Harmony Grove Cardinals have seen their fair share of ups and downs this season. But when it come to beating a rival like Glen Rose, it is all ups for the moment. Earlier in the season, the Cardinals dominated the Beavers on the road, winning huge 60-36. At the time, that was the Cardinals’ second win of the season.

Lady Panthers 10-0 in conference

PEARCY – The Benton Lady Panthers are probably forgetting what losing feels like. The Lady Panthers won their 12th consecutive game and improved to 10-0 in the 6A South conference with a 52-25 victory of the Lake Hamilton Lady Wolves on Tuesday night. And again, defense has been the force behind Benton’s success.

“We were playing just stellar defense,” Benton Coach Jerry Chumley said. “They had four field and three free throws [in the first half]. We couldn’t ask for any more defensively. The second half, it just kind of continued.”

Hornets cruise, ladies lose

BRYANT – The Bryant Lady Hornets fell to the Van Buren Lady Pointers 58-54 on Tuesday night in 7A/6A Central conference action in Bryant.
“Van Buren is a good team,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “They were well-prepared. They did stuff to us defensively that we haven’t seen all year.”

“We never really got into a flow offensively, but our kids continued to compete. We didn’t play very well, but such is life in the 7A Central and we got beat. They have four or five kids that they can put on the floor that can score.”

Three Hornets sign to play football

BRYANT – Three Bryant football players signed college letters of intent Wednesday on National Signing Day, but delayed their party until Friday.
“These guys are smart,” Bryant coach Paul Calley said. “They came to me and asked if they could have their party on Friday, so all of the media would come out.”

Receiver/defensive back Dillion Winfrey signed with Central Arkansas, linebacker Marshall Everett inked with Arkansas-Monticello and running back Karon Dismuke signed with Southern Arkansas.

Lady Hornet ready to just run

BRYANT – Bryant Lady Hornets’ senior distance runner Ashlyn Lessenberry had a decent idea where she wanted to go to college when she found out where her best friend was going to play softball. Lessenberry is following her friend, Kayla Sory, to Henderson State University as she signed a letter of intent to run for the Lady Reddies in the Bryant Gym on Wednesday morning.
