January 13, 2012

Sports rivalries in Saline County have been apart of the counties history for many years. From Benton and Bryant to Bauxite and Glen Rose, Rivalries run deep in the blood of Central Arkansas sports.

January 13, 2012

The Bryant Lady Hornets improved to 2-0 in 7A Central conference play when they defeated the Van Buren Lady Pointers 49-46 on Tuesday in Van Buren.

Up 47-46 with 10 seconds left, Bryant’s Kiara Moore hit two free throws to seal the game.

“My kids played really well,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “The Democrat [Gazette] ranked Van Buren second in class 6A. Any time you win on the road, it’s a good win.”

Lady Cardinals win, boys drop to 0-4 in conference

January 11, 2012

Harmony Grove continued their quest to another conference title on Tuesday when they played host to Cutter Morning Star. Unfortunately, only one team was to show up against the Eagles.

The Lady Cardinals started the night for Harmony Grove and on a very high note, especially for their confidence, beating the Lady Eagles 45-32 to get to 2-4 in conference play.

The Lady Cardinals opened the first quarter with a 16-4 run heading into the second, thanks big in part to their senior leadership who had 10 of the first quarter points for the Lady Cardinals.

Ladies rout, Miners eke one out

January 11, 2012

The Bauxite Lady Miners held the Pulaski Robinson Lady Senators to six points in the second half in defeating them 48-24 in 7-4A conference action on Tuesday at Fred Dawson Gym in Bauxite.

“Defensively, I didn’t think we played bad,” Bauxite Coach Josh Harrison said. “We were out of position a few times, especially in the press. I thought we did a pretty decent job of scrambling and hustling defensively. Out of the press, we had some people out of position and a few people not rotating quick enough. They got a few deep passes and some easy shots there early.”

NBA players in China missing out

January 7, 2012

Oops. That's what I have to say to those NBA players who signed contracts with the Chinese Basketball Association when the NBA Lockout was in full effect. The lockout ended on Christmas Day and the NBA is going on with a shortened season, but the Chinese season doesn't end until March, so what are the former NBA players doing that signed contracts with the Chinese teams doing? Staying in China, despite some players' efforts to renege on their contracts.

January 7, 2012

The Bauxite Miners led by 11 in the first quarter against the Malvern Leopards, but lost 67-51 on Thursday night in 7-4A conference action in Malvern.

Lady Cardinals win, boys' woes continue

January 4, 2012

For most schools throughout the state, the Christmas and New Year’s holidays mean time off from homework, class and sports for athletes. But, not for the Harmony Grove senior high basketball teams. Both teams got back to work on Tuesday night, one day before even returning to school full time. The Lady Cardinals kicked the night off with a 3A conference match up against Episcopal. And what a Happy New Year it was for the Lady Cardinals, as they beat the Lady Wildcats 47-24.

Lady Miners come back for win

January 4, 2012

The Bauxite Lady Miners came back from a big first-half deficit to defeat the Maumelle Lady Hornets 61-49 on Tuesday in 7-4A conference action at Fred Dawson Gym in Bauxite. The Lady Miners were outscored 14-7 in the first quarter.

Down 18-9 early in the second quarter, junior Mary Crow led the Lady Miners back. Crow hit a short jump shot at the 6:30 mark to spark a 5-0 run to make it an 18-14 Lady Hornets lead with 5:20 left. Maumelle (10-6, 2-1 7-4A) scored four straight points capped by a Daysha Ross 5-foot jumper to make it 22-14 with 4:15 left.

Harmony Grove girls fall in tournament

December 28, 2011

The Harmony Grove senior high girls basketball team got back to work on Tuesday when they traveled to Carlisle for the Carlisle Christmas Tournament. The Lady Cardinals got things under way against Maumelle, but the outcome was not very good as they fell 55-39 Tuesday morning.

“It was a sloppy, early-morning game,” head Lady Cardinals’ Coach John White said. “Both teams finally settled in later on.”

Lady Miners drop opening game of classic

December 28, 2011

The Bauxite Lady Miners came back from their week and a half break and lost 60-49 to the Magnet Cove Lady Panthers on Tuesday in the Jessieville Christmas Classic in Jessieville.

“We didn’t play really well,” Bauxite Coach Josh Harrison said. “Magnet Cove played with a lot of effort and intensity [Tuesday] and we didn’t match theirs today.”

The Lady Miners (9-4) didn’t have a problem scoring in the first quarter finishing with 19 points, but defensively, Bauxite couldn’t stop Magnet Cove, allowing it to score 18 points in the opening quarter.
