Lady Hornet signs letter of intent

Bryant senior Abbi Stearns signed a letter of intent Thursday to attend and play basketball for Central Baptist College in Conway.

Stearns has been a member of the Bryant varsity team for the past three years and started the past two. She said playing for the Lady Hornets has been a “real experience.”

Last week, Stearns was named to the 2011 7A Central All-Conference Team, which she also made last year as a junior. As this year’s lone senior, she led the Lady Hornets in rebounds, averaging eight per game. She led the team in rebounds as a junior, too.

Lady Hornets romp Russellville 10-0

The Lady Hornets got off to a slow start Tuesday, but Russellville never got anything started.

After being held scoreless in four innings, Bryant scored six runs in the fifth inning and four in the seventh to beat the Lady Cyclones 10-0.

Head coach Debbie Clark said, “Sometimes it just takes the players an inning or two to figuyre otua the pitcher.”

Bryant (11-3, 2-0 7A Central) faces Conway today at home at 5 p.m.

Four of the Lady Hornets runs in the fifth inning came off a grand slam by Jessie Taylor, bringing in herself, Katie Stillman, Jenna Bruick and Hannah Rice.

Lady Panthers defeat Malvern

Benton freshman Carmen King scored a goal off an assist from Mariah Temple at the 9:29 minute mark in the first half as the Benton Lady Panthers defeated Malvern 1-0 Monday night.

“She is actually our leading scorer on the year,” coach Jason Gentry said. “She has five goals on the year and does a good job of finding the net. She controls the ball.

“Sometimes she tries to do too much but when she just focuses on striking the ball, she does a good job. It helps that she has got some pretty good players around her too.”

Bryant’s Adams named to all-tourney team

Three members of the Bryant girls basketball team were honored last week by the Arkansas Activities Association.

Sophomore McKenzie Adams was named to the 2011 7A All-Tournament Team.

Head coach Blake Condley said that, although the Lady Hornets lost in the first round to Rogers, Adams scored half of the team’s points in their only game of the tournament.

“She played very aggressively,” he said. “We were in a position where other girls didn’t score well, and she did.”
