Yellowjackets get final sting

January 17, 2013

BRYANT - If the 7A/6A conference season wasn’t already a nightmare for the 0-3 Bryant Hornets, Wednesday was. After having to postpone its Tuesday game with Sheridan due to inclement weather, Bryant rescheduled and took the floor Wednesday in hopes of ending its already disappointing conference showing.
The Sheridan Yellowjackets brought their size, speed and athleticism to the Hornets Nest and flew away victorious. Despite losing a large first half lead, the Jackets regained momentum to begin the second half and put the game away for good, winning 61-56.

So what's the big deal no one got in?

January 16, 2013

After no Major League Baseball player was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame for the first time since 1996, I’ve heard a lot of clamor that the vote should be taken away from sports writers. What? Then who is the vote supposed to go to. The fact no one got into the Hall this year is a testament to how hard it should be to get voted in, regardless who is voting.

Benton sitting pretty after ugly affair

January 14, 2013

SHERIDAN – The Benton Lady Panthers are starting to get used to winning in the 7A/6A South conference. After going 13-1 last season for the conference championship, losing their last conference game to El Dorado by one point, Benton has now started 3-0 in conference this season after a 38-24 victory against the Lady Yellowjackets in Sheridan on Friday. Just as defense won the them the conference last season, defense is doing it again this year.

Bryant routs for 1st conf. win

January 14, 2013

LITTLE ROCK – The Bryant Lady Hornets picked up their first 7A/6A South conference win of the season with a 61-14 drubbing of the JA Fair Lady War Eagles on Friday night in Little Rock. Ten different Lady Hornets scored in the game as Bryant used a 29-0 run between the first and second quarters to propel it to the rout.
“I thought we were able to get out early,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “We got some transition baskets, got a little confidence and I thought we played well. This was a good win for us coming off a tough one Tuesday. It’s good to get back on the winning track.”

It's a small world after all

January 14, 2013

This year like many years in the past, I made the trip down to War Memorial to see the Salt Bowl between the Benton Panthers and the Bryant Hornets. Again this year over 20,000 people gathered to see this high school football game. Many doubted the crowd would be that big this year since the game was moved to the fourth week of the football season, but the naysayers were wrong. The Saline County shootout drew another huge crowd. That is what I call having a passion for football.

Lady Cards 'quit' in loss

January 11, 2013

LITTLE ROCK - With the first half of the conference season nearing its end, the Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals are having trouble getting into the win column since coming back from Christmas break. Before taking a small sabbatical, the Lady Cardinals had won back-to-back 5-3A conference games to even their record at 2-2 in league play.

LITTLE ROCK - There has never been a sports team that strives off having its teeth kicked in by opponents. For the Harmony Grove Cardinals, they are not a fan of it either. But on Friday, the first game back from Christmas break, the Cardinals welcomed Jessieville into Haskell, but walked away battered and bruised after getting mauled by the Lions.

Down big early, Bryant loses heartbreaker

January 9, 2013

PINE BLUFF- The Bryant Lady Hornets lost a heartbreaker 40-39 to the Pine Bluff Lady Zebras on Tuesday night at McFadden Field House.
“I thought we really played really well in the second half,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “[We] made a run at them and got the lead. They made a play with a second to go to beat us. We’ll keep working to get better.”

Lady Panthers annihilate War Eagles

January 9, 2013

BENTON – The Benton Lady Panthers started their 7A/6A South conference game against JA Fair on a 16-0 run on their way to a 62-14 victory over the Lady War Eagles on Tuesday night at Benton Arena.
“We got through the game with no injuries,” Benton Coach Jerry Chumley said. “We executed everything pretty good and shot the ball OK. We’re healthy heading to Sheridan Friday night.”

HASKELL - Heading into Christmas break, the Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals had their heads held high coming off of back-to-back 5-3A conference wins after dropping the two previous. After splitting in the Carlisle Holiday Classic, the Lady Cardinals returned home on Friday to face a very familiar foe in Jessieville.
Hoping for another big win against a really good team, Harmony Grove had its dreams crushed as the Lady Lions pounced, pulling away with a 42-15 blowout performance to stay perfect at 13-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
