Lady Miners win 3rd straight

January 21, 2015

WALDRON – Though the Bauxite Lady Miners improved to 3-3 in the 7-4A Conference with a 50-29 victory over the Waldron Lady Bulldogs on the road Friday, Coach Cody Lambert, though happy with the win, didn’t think his team played as well as it should have.

“We didn’t play very good, didn’t execute our offense very well,” Lambert said. “We didn’t get the loose balls, didn’t block out very well, we just didn’t do a very good job. But it’s good when you can mess up on a lot of things and still have a dominate victory.”

BRYANT – The Bryant Lady Hornets swim team definitely defended its home turf at the Bryant Invitational at the Bishop Park Natatorium in Bryant on Thursday. The Benton Lady Panthers would take third with 200 points, followed by Rogers Heritage (187) and El Dorado (149).

Panthers fall to Hall in OT

January 15, 2015

BENTON – Benton Panther junior Clay Anderson hit a 3-pointer to force overtime against the Hall Warriors, but the Panthers would ultimately fall 51-47, dropping Benton to 0-2 in the 6A South Conference.

Down 38-35 with 23.2 left in regulation, Anderson would take a pass from junior post Jake Scoggins and hit a tough 3-pointer with five seconds remaining from the right side.

The Panthers (9-6, 0-2 South) would take a 40-38 lead in overtime when senior Braden Warhurst hit two free throws, and would lead 42-40 after junior Cason Maertens scored a bucket on a tough shot.

Defense lifts Lady Hornets past Belles

BRYANT — In order for the Bryant to make the 7A State playoffs in March, the Lady Hornets must have a winning record against the three other 7A teams from the 7A/6A Central Conference.

Bryant made the step in the right direction in making that goal on Tuesday night when the Lady Hornets defeated Mount St. Mary 46-36 despite shooting just 20 (10 of 50) percent from the floor.

“There’s six games that are going to determine whether we go to the state tournament, and in those six games we’re 1-0,” Bryant Head Coach Brad Matthews said. “That’s the biggest takeaway of the night.”

Bauxite beats defending champs

BAUXITE – The Bauxite Lady Miners and the Malvern Lady Leopards battled against each other for the win Friday night in Bauxite, and the Lady Miners ended the game victorious, 43-38, for their first 7-4A Conference game of the year. Bauxite Head Coach Cody Lambert said the team played great defensively against Malvern, the defending 4A state champs.

“Offensively, we hit a couple of threes and got the ball where it needed to go,” Lambert said. “We played good.”

Hornets win Central opener

January 14, 2015

GREENWOOD – The Bryant Hornets rebounded from an ugly first quarter in which they gave up three 3-pointers in the same spot to defeat Greenwood 48-35 in their 7A Central Conference opener.

“Early in the game, we were playing full-court man and they were beating us off the dribble,” Bryant Head Coach Mike Abrahamson said. “They made three threes in the corner and that hurt us.

“But we got better as the game went on and it led to us pulling away.”

Panthers handle Hornets

January 8, 2015

BENTON – After beating the Bryant Hornets 55-45 in the first game of the season, the Benton Panthers made it a clean sweep with a 54-48 win over the Hornets in the Saline County Shootout on Tuesday night in Benton Arena.

“That was our 13th game,” Benton Coach Dexter Hendrix said. “Being a young, inexperienced team like we are and that’s only our second home game. I think we’re still learning the importance of how to protect our home court. I didn’t think we did that in the first half. They outplayed us and were real physical and it took us a while to respond.

Bryant downs Benton in Shootout

BENTON – Behind 22 points from senior Jakeria Otey, the Bryant Lady Hornets topped a struggling Benton Lady Panthers squad 41-34 in the Saline County Shootout on Tuesday at Benton Arena. Otey hit 10 of 12 free throws in the second half to help extend Bryant’s lead.

“I thought the fourth quarter we took care of the ball better,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “I thought we executed and Jakeria was able to get in the lane and make some positive things happen. Offensively and defensively we made enough plays down the stretch.”
