Sheridan hopes to bounce back this week

After losing to the Harrison Golden Goblins 28-10 this past Friday, Sheridan Yellowjackets’ coach Louis Campbell said there were positives despite his team giving up six turnovers in the opening game of the season. The Yellowjackets take on the Arkadelphia Badgers at Yellowjackets Stadium Friday.

Arkansas Travelers open playoffs against the Naturals

The Arkansas Travelers open the 2011 Texas League playoffs against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock night, and the Travs’ road to get there has been an interesting one. It’s the first time the Travs have been to the TL playoffs since they won the championship in 2008.
The Travelers went 36-31 to win the TL North Division first half by one game over the Naturals to qualify for the playoffs and went 32-38 in the second half. The Naturals won the second half North with a 38-32 record.

Bryant golf teams split against Russellville

The Russellville Cyclones defeated the Bryant Hornets’ golf team 157 to 160 on Thursday at Hurricane Creek Country Club. The Bryant junior varsity team shot a 173 for third place.
Junior Austin Harmon shot a match-best 3-under-par 33, but the rest of the Hornets didn’t give much help as the Cyclones took victory.
“Yesterday was a very bad match for us,” Bryant coach Keith Dale said. “Austin Harmon shot very well, but the rest of the team didn’t play very well.”
Harmon finished with five birdies, two bogeys and also had two pars.

Bryant sweeps Pine Bluff in singles; Finishes 1-3 in doubles competition

The Bryant Hornets’ tennis team defeated the Pine Bluff Zebras on Thursday in Pine Bluff. The Lady Hornets swept its single’s matches 2-0 and split its double’s matches 1-1. The Hornets’ boys swept its singles matches 2-0, but were swept 0-2 in its doubles matches.
Bryant Hornets coach Steve Wilson said senior Callie Hogancamp and sophomore Whitney Butler both played well for their second victories of the year.
Hogancamp defeated Toreia Harris 8-1 in Girls 1 singles and Butler beat Brittney Sargent 8-0 in Girls 2 singles.

Benton looks to break losing streak in Salt Bowl

It is Christmas morning for the two biggest schools of Saline County as the Salt Bowl game between Benton and Bryant has finally arrived. All the hype and smack talk has led up to one of the biggest football rivalry games in the state as nearly 30,000 fans are expected to show up tonight at War Memorial Stadium.
For the Benton Panthers, the key for tonight against the Hornets will be their defense. In year’s past, Benton has had a fairly efficient defense but it has been their struggling offense that has put the defense in bad field positions.

Bryant gets past LR Central

The Bryant Lady Hornets’ volleyball team defeated the Little Rock Central Lady Tigers in both teams’ first 7A Central conference match of the year. The Lady Hornets took the first two games of the match easily 25-13 and 25-14, before dropping the third set 25-23.
The Lady Tigers gave them some problems in the fourth, but the Lady Hornets pulled away and won 25-20.
“I’m happy we won,” Bryant coach Beth Solomon said. “It was a good win for our first conference game. Now we’re 1-0 and in conference. That’s a positive thing.

Benton finishes second in pool, loses in second round of tourney play

The Benton Lady Panthers defeated Malvern in four games (25-18, 19-25, 25-17, 25-18) on Monday for their first win of the regular season.
In the first game, Alex Williams had two kills, Erin Jackson had a kill and Kristen Ryan had a kill. Williams also had an ace and junior Sarah Carrter had an ace. Courtland Kaufholtz had two aces.
In the second game, Williams had two kills, Morgan had four kills, senior Hayley Ferguson had one and sophomore Allison Reynolds had two.
Ferguson had one ace and Williams had two aces.

Bryant loses in first round of Spike Fest

The Bryant Lady Hornets’ volleyball team started Spikefest 2011 on Saturday with a sweep (25-18, 25-13) of the Magnolia Lady Panthers at Little Rock Christian Academy.
Bryant followed with a split with the Little Rock Christian Lady Warriors (16-25, 28-26) and swept Little Rock Hall Lady Warriors before getting a rematch with the defending state champion Bentonville Lady Tigers in tournament play. “We started the day looking really good against Magnolia,” Bryant coach Beth Solomon said. “The girls were hitting hard and digging up almost everything.”

Parker returns as Cards romp in scrimmage

HASKELL — The Harmony Grove Cardinals heading into their second season as a football team. With a finishing record of 2-8 last season, including blow-out wins over Poyen and Cutter Morning Star, the Cardinals are looking to double their wins and try to stun some teams in 2011.
The preseason for the Cardinals ended on Thursday with a three team scrimmage at Cardinal Stadium. With Woodlawn and Cutter Morning Star participating, the Cardinals looked to get some much needed work in. That's exactly what they did.

Neathery: 'We are still a little sloppy'

The Benton Panthers finished off their preseason on a little bit of a shaky note heading into the final week of preparation before the 2011 season. Head coach Scott Neathery played his starters for only one half against Malvern on Tuesday. After playing two 15 minute quarters, the Panthers and Leopards were knotted up at 10-10. Benton could have scored more with a little more focus on the field.
“We are still a little sloppy,” Neathery said. “We still need to polish up.”
