SOFTBALL: Glen Rose falls to Bismarck 12-9

March 17, 2011

The Lady Beavers held a 9-0 lead Tuesday going into the fifth inning against Bismarck, but allowed the Lady Lions to rally back and win 12-9.
Senior Tiffany Houpt pitched all seven innings for Glen Rose, earning the loss.

"Tiffany had some control issues," Glen Rose head coach Kyle Lem said.
While giving up the 12 runs, Houpt allowed 10 hits and nine walks. She had five strikeouts on the night.

"Being up nine runs, we have to score those runs in the bottom of the fourth and put the game out of reach," Lem said.

After the fourth inning, the Lady Beavers only recorded three hits.

BASEBALL: Sheridan knocks off defending champs

March 17, 2011

With runners on first and second and two outs in the seventh inning, a routine ground ball to second went through the legs of Lake Hamilton’s second baseman, which allowed the runner on second to score and tie the game.

The throw from left field to the catcher sailed and allowed Billy Wicker to easily score from third and give Sheridan a 7-6 win over defending 6A State Champion Lake Hamilton Tuesday night.

“Getting a win like that was big,” coach Mike Moore said. “To hit like did off their really good pitching was huge.

BASEBALL: Glen Rose throws team no-hitter

March 16, 2011

Although Glen Rose gave up two runs against Bismarck, all were unearned and the Beavers’ pitching roster essentially threw a combined no-hitter in their 12-2 win Tuesday.

Glen Rose head coach Chase Meyers said, “I didn’t seem like we were pitching that well, because we had a couple of errors and they had runners on.

“But our guys stopped the bleeding, and it could’ve been a lot worse.”
Earning the win for Glen Rose was freshman Clay Holicer, who gave up two unearned runs in 2 2/3 innings. He walked three batters and struck out two, while hitting two with pitches.

BASEBALL: Miners beat Cardinals 6-0

March 16, 2011

HASKELL — The Miners jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
Bauxite beat Harmony Grove 6-0 Tuesday, scoring all of its runs in the first three innings thanks to good hitting, smart base running and well-executed defense.

Bauxite head coach Michael Mattox said, “We were much more solid on defense. We acted like we knew what we were doing, and we were in position.”

On the other end, Harmony Grove head coach Brandon Kelly said, “We weren’t mentally tough today. It showed when we got ready in warmups; we were clowning around and weren’t focused at the task at hand.

BREAKING NEWS: Benton bounces back to defeat Vilonia 11-1

March 15, 2011

BENTON — During Monday's practice, the Benton Lady Panthers worked exclusively on getting runners in. In their two losses in the Bootsie Gordon Tournament, Benton left 11 players on base.

"We sat down and looked at the games we won and the games we lost," coach Eric Ryan said. "I know one of things we have been doing is leaving runners on base.
"We got to do whatever it takes to get runners in. It doesn't if it is a bunt, a push or hitting a ground ball."

Pelphrey doesn’t agree with firing at Arkansas

March 15, 2011

FAYETTEVILLE — John Pelphrey made his feelings clear on his way out at Arkansas.

The former Razorbacks coach, speaking for the first time since being fired by athletic director Jeff Long on Sunday, said Monday that he didn’t feel he was given enough time to complete a turnaround at the school.

“I do not agree with the decision yesterday to make a change,” Pelphrey said. “I do not. I absolutely do not. Obviously, I would have liked more time. It takes time to build stability in a program. Every situation is different. This situation was different.

Benton angler follows brother, wins FLW event

March 14, 2011

You could say winning the Walmart Open on Beaver Lake is sort of a Blaylock family tradition.
At least, it is now after Keeton Blaylock, 20, of Benton won the FLW Tour event held March 3-6 as a co-angler, earning $20,000.
His brother, Stetson Blaylock, 23, of Haskell, a professional on the tour, won the four-day event event three years ago.
This was the younger Blaylock's first tournament win, and one that he said held special meaning, considering its location.

BASEBALL: Two-run fifth clinches win for CAC over Benton

March 13, 2011

BENTON — The Benton Panthers lost to Central Arkansas Christian Friday night after two runs in the fifth inning gave the Mustangs a three-run cushion as they went on to win 6-2 at Panther Field.
With runners on first and second and leading 3-2 in the top of the fifth, CAC would score their first run of the inning when Benton pitcher Justin Vincent over threw the third baseman. CAC pitcher Joey Pinney laid down what would have been a sacrifice bunt, but Vincent’s throw sailed allowing David Downs, who reached on an infield single to lead off the inning, to score.
