Benton claws, but falls in opener

SEARCY – The Benton Lady Panthers fought hard, but fell 4-0 to the Mountain Home Lady Bombers in the first round of the 6A State Tournament in Searcy on Thursday.
It was a scoreless game until the Lady Bombers struck with about four minutes left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead at halftime.
“The score is not a true indicator of the way the game was played,” Benton Coach Jason Gentry said. “ It was a very even, physical game.  In the second half they pulled away because they could sub three to five girls at a time without much of a drop off in the talent.”
“I’m very proud of the effort these girls had throughout the year.  Seniors Cady Jefferson, Leigh Ann Baber, and Samantha Lee have done a great job of holding this group together through a rough year.  In regards to the younger players, I’m very excited to see how they develop in the coming years.”
The Lady Panthers finished the year at 2-15.
