Benton woman contender for service award
Jenny Johnston, a dance instructor at Dance! Laura Stilwell & Company in Benton, is one of the finalists for the 2014 Arkansas Community Service Awards.
The awards program, now in its 37th year, is sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Human Services Division of Community Service and Nonprofit Support, KARK 4, Duncan Law Firm and the Governor’s Office.
Johnston was nominated for the honor by the Royal Players, for whom she has choreographed several musical productions.
She received a special volunteer award from the local theater organization at the annual Ben-Tonys awards presentation last year.
Johnston also has choreographed Weekend Theatre productions in Little Rock and musical shows for area schools.
She also is a volunteer with Midtown Church in Bryant, where she leads the preschoolers' music each week and teaches a 2-year-old class.
She is a longtime resident of Benton.
The winners of the awards will be announced in a banquet set for 6 p.m. today at the Governor's Mansion, 1800 Center St. in Little Rock. The event will be televised on KARK a week after it occurs.
Award winners are selected on the basis of their outstanding volunteer service – for demonstrating conscientiousness and unselfishness that benefits the community at large and exemplifies the highest ideals of humanitarianism. The recipients are selected by statewide committees comprised of outstanding community leaders and volunteers, including past CSA winners.
