OMAHA, Neb. â€“ After defeating Longmont, Colo., in their first game in the Battle of Omaha Under-19 American Legion baseball tournament in Omaha, Neb., the Bryant Black Sox won four more games in the tournament before suffering their first loss of the season 4-3 to Pinnacle, Papillion, Neb. After the Longmont win, Bryant won 9-1 over Lincoln Pius, 5-2 over Branson, Mo., 6-2 over Montana, and 5-2 over Hays, Kan.
In the 4-3 loss, the Black Sox (12-1) were up 3-0 going into the last inning, but Pinnacle scored four runs in the seventh to take the win away from Bryant. Pinnacle actually scored all four runs with two outs.
â€śIt just ended in pretty bad fashion,â€ť Bryant Coach Darren Hurt said. â€śWe had a three-run lead going into the last inning and gave up four in the bottom of the seventh.â€ť
Tryce Schacilin, who started the game pitching shutout baseball for six innings, walked the first batter of the seventh inning before inducing a fly out and striking out the next man for the second out. Two singles later loaded the bases, and No. 8 hitter Landon Weisbeck, who Schacilin had struck out twice before, hit a bases-clearing double to tie the game. Weisbeck later scored the winning run on a single.
The Black Sox scored one in the first and two in the second before both pitchers shut the offenses down until the final inning. Tyler Nelson got a one out, four-pitch walk in the first inning and went to second base on Jordan Taylorâ€™s single to right field. Nelson scored on Landon Pickettâ€™s single to make it a 1-0 Bryant lead.
The Black Sox scored two runs in the second with two outs. Marcus Wilson walked and Ozzie Hurt singled with two outs. Hunter Mayall walked to load the bases and Nelson hit a two-run single to score Wilson and Hurt for a 3-0 Bryant lead.
â€śIt was a good tournament,â€ť Hurt said. â€śWe had a lot of good things. We got a lot of games in.â€ť
In the 9-1 decision over Lincoln Pius, the Black Sox scored six runs in the first inning and Pickett hit a home run. Mayall went 1 for 2 with a double and three RBIs, and Taylor and Wilson each went 2 for 3. Schacilin got the win giving up two hits and a walk in two innings, while striking out one. Hayden Daniel pitched three shutout innings striking out two, and Josh Pultro gave up a run in two innings pitched and struck out three.
Nate Rutherford started for the Black Sox in their 5-2 victory over Branson. Rutherford pitched a complete game striking out 12 in seven innings. He gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk. The game was tied at 2-apiece going into the bottom of the sixth inning when Pultro reached on a one-out error, Wilson singled and Hurt followed with an RBI single to right field to score the winning run. Mayall hit a two-run double to put the Black Sox up by the final margin. Pultro and Hurt each went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Down 2-1 to Montana going into the top of the fifth inning, the Black Sox took control when Pickett hit a two-run home run in the fifth and Mayall hit a two-run shot in the sixth inning to propel Bryant to victory. Hurt started on the mound and got the win giving up two runs (none earned) on four hits and two walks, while striking out three in six innings. Mayall finished 3 for 4 with the home run, a double, three runs and two RBIs, Taylor went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Pickett went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
The Black Sox scored four runs with two outs in the top of the third inning in their 5-2 win over Hays. Hayden Lessenberry reached on an error to start the inning and Daniel singled to put runners at first and second. Hurt sacrificed the runners over before Mayall flied out for the second out. Tyler Brown walked on four pitches to load the bases and Taylor hit a two-run single to right field. Pickett followed with a two-run double for the 4-0 lead and Pultro hit a solo home run in the fourth for the 5-0 advantage before Hays scored its only two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Nelson pitched a complete game for the win. He gave up two runs on five hits and two walks and struck out six.
The Black Sox travel to Sheridan on Wednesday and first pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.View more articles in:
