Black Sox open Regional

August 9, 2012

The Bryant Black Sox played at 9:30 this morning as they were the opening game of the Mid-South Regional Tournament in New Orleans. The Black Sox played the Hub City Bombers out of Hattiesburg, Miss., and results will be in tomorrow's paper.
The Black Sox won the Arkansas American Legion State Tournament sweeping the field to advance to the regional in New Orleans. The winner of the regional will advance to the American Legion World Series held in Shelby, N.C.
Talking with Black Sox Coach Darren Hurt by phone on the bus trip to New Orleans on Wednesday, he said Bryant isn't very familiar with Hub City, a team which sports nine players going to college to play baseball, including Cort Brinson who signed with Mississippi State.
"We really don’t know just a whole lot about them," Hurt said. "We’ve seen a lot of teams from different states this year, but we haven’t seen them. All we know about them is they’re a really good team, but they all are at this point."
The Black Sox stand at 33-5 on the year and went 5-0 to sweep the State Tournament. Bryant defeated Rogers 11-7 to open the tourney followed by wins over North Little Rock (14-4), Texarkana (3-1), Paragould (12-2) and again Texarkana in the 6-5 championship game win.
Hurt said the Black Sox have looked good in recent practices and that the team is ready to play. Jordan Taylor started for the Black Sox today and if the Black Sox win, they will play at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. If they lose to the Bombers, they will play another early game at 9:30 a.m. Friday
"We got to win [today]," Hurt said. "We can’t get in the loser’s bracket. We drew Mississippi right off the bat. It’s not going to be a cakewalk."
Even though Hub City may have the advantage with less fatigue because of its considerably less distance of travel – 2 hours to Bryant's 8 hours – Hurt didn't seem very worried about it.
"They’re right there in their back yard, but this isn’t a bad gig, though," Hurt said of making it to the regional.
