As time goes by, the things we use every day, tend to change and “modernize;” they don’t necessarily improve. Take, for example, the simple grocery sack. Once a large, sturdy free-standing bag made of heavy brown paper that held your cans, boxes and bottles easily. And when empty, it folded flat.

Seriously, I like election season, once the madness of the filing period is over and we at the newspaper have waded through all the paperwork, organized all the dozens — sometimes hundreds — of names, written articles introducing you to all the local candidates and things settle down a bit.

On Monday, Lt. Gov. Bill Halter announced his intention to challenge incumbent U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln in the Democratic primary. For those following Arkansas politics closely, the move was not unusual. Speculation had been growing for weeks, if not months, that he would forego re-election in an effort to unseat Lincoln.
