Bryant dominates again
BEEBE – The Bryant Hornets used a complete team performance to add to their victory total for the season at the Beebe Badger Relays on Thursday. The Hornets scored in every event and totaled 162 points, which was 100 points ahead of runner-up Beebe (62 points). Twenty-nine teams scored in the meet, with Searcy (47), Batesville (43), and Rivercrest (36) rounding out the top five teams.
“This was a nice way to finish off the regular season,” Bryant Coach Steve Oury said. “While it would have been great to pick up some more state-qualifying performances, it’s hard to complain when you pick up points in every event.”
Hornet senior Darian Jarrett won the meet high point award with 26.5 points. Jarrett took first place in the high jump (6-0), second place in the long jump (20-8), third place in the 200-meter dash (22.70), and was part of the winning 4x400 meter relay team with Steven Murdock, Austin Vail, and Pierce Finney. Their winning time was 3:28.87.
“There were several personal records set and it was great to see Darian Jarrett get the high-point award,” Oury said. He has had an outstanding senior season. Our focus now will turn to training to prepare for the 7A West Conference meet at Springdale Har-Ber on May 1.”
Also earning first-place honors for Bryant were Justin Combs in the pole vault (13-6), Mar’Kevius Nelson in the triple jump (42-9), Charlie Terry in the 1600-meter run (4:40.03), the 4x100-meter relay team of Nelson, Brushawn Hunter, Vail, and Makiya Hunter (43.72), Brenden Young in the 300-meter hurdles (41.74), John Winn in the 200-meter dash (22.43), and Clifton Hampton in the 3200-meter run (10:19.78).
Also scoring for the Hornets were: 100-meter dash, Brushawn Hunter: seventh place (11.50); 400-meter dash, Steven Murdock: second place (51.27); Pierce Finney: seventh place (52.81); 800-meter run, Mark Winn: third place (2:04.58); 1600-meter run, Ben Majors: fourth place (4:49.12); 3200-meter run, Spencer Adami: fifth place (11:08.22); 110-meter hurdles, Brenden Young: second place (16.01); Dillon Daniels: seventh place (17.59); 300-meter hurdles Dillon Daniels: fifth place (44.62); 4x800-meter relay, Nicholas Schmidt, Dru Wen, Joey Colvert, Nathan Stewart: fifth place (9:01.05); Long Jump, Brushawn Hunter: third place (20-6.5); Triple Jump, Makiya Hunter: seventh place (39-9.5); Shot Put, Christian Washington: seventh place (41-4.25) and Discus, Christian Washington: sixth place (115-4).
BEEBE – The Bryant Lady Hornet track team traveled to Beebe Thursday and dominated a field of 27 teams at the Beebe Badger Relays. The Lady Hornets took first place in nine events and went on to win the team championship with 127 points. Beebe was runner-up with 62 points, followed by Mills (53), Nettelton (39), Batesville (37) and Vilonia (35).
Bryant was led by seniors’ Leah Ward and Melinda Murdock.
Ward scored 25 points by taking first in the long jump (16’11”) and the triple jump (35’2”). She was also on both sprint relay teams that finished first.
Murdock scored 23 points. She won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:23. She took third in the 1600-meter run in a time of 5:28. She added a fifth place in the long jump (16’0”) and was a member of the 4 x 400-meter relay that finished first.
“This was our last regular season meet of the year and it was great to go into our conference and state meet on the heels of such a great team performance,” Bryant Coach Danny Westbrook said.
“Leah Ward and Melinda Murdock just continue to do an outstanding job of leading this team. I could not ask for any better senior leaders.”
Junior Jayla Anderson added 20 points by taking first in both of the hurdle events. She won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.7 and took first in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.7.
“I thought Jayla Anderson really had some breakthrough performances in her hurdle events tonight,” Westbrook said.
Junior Rachael Owens and sophomore Haley Hood both scored 16 points.
Owens was third in the high jump (4’10”), fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:05.4), and ran on both sprint relays that finished first.
Hood was a member of all three relay teams that took first place. She also added a third place in the 400-meter dash (1:03.4) and sixth place in the high jump (4’8”).
Junior Caitlyn Bell took the top spot in the 3200-meter run with a winning time of 12:16.
The Lady Hornets won all three relay events. The 4x100-meter team of Reagan Smith, Ward, Hood, and Owens took the win with a time of 51.6. The 4x400-meter team of Ward, Hood, Murdock, and Owens won in 4:14. The 4x800-meter relay team of Talyn Billins, Bell, Hannah Shelby, and Hood took first in 10:22.
