LITTLE ROCK – The Bryant Lady Hornets picked up their first 7A/6A South conference win of the season with a 61-14 drubbing of the JA Fair Lady War Eagles on Friday night in Little Rock. Ten different Lady Hornets scored in the game as Bryant used a 29-0 run between the first and second quarters to propel it to the rout.
“I thought we were able to get out early,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “We got some transition baskets, got a little confidence and I thought we played well. This was a good win for us coming off a tough one Tuesday. It’s good to get back on the winning track.”
The Lady Hornets (7-10, 1-2 South) lost 40-39 to Pine Bluff on Tuesday when after trailing big to the Lady Zebras, Bryant led 39-38 before Pine Bluff hit a long jumper with a second left to win it.
The closest it would be on Friday night against Fair was when the score was 2-0 after a layup from junior guard Dezarea Duckworth assisted by senior forward Courtney Davidson. Bryant would go up 6-0 after consecutive baskets from Davidson and then Fair would go on a 3-2 run to make it 8-3 Lady Hornets with 5:27 left in the first quarter. From that point on until Ja’Nia Williams hit a 5-foot jumper for Fair with 1:52 left in the first half, the Lady Hornets scored 29 consecutive points, with the score being 37-5 at that point. Bryant senior forward Kristen Scarlett scored on a layup with 24 seconds left in the first half to make it 40-5, the score at halftime. Layups, many of them uncontested, accounted for 32 points in the first half as the War Eagles had a tough time getting back on defense.
Scarlett hit a free throw to begin the second half, but Fair would respond with a 4-0 run to make it 41-9, but the Lady Hornets would follow that with 13-0 run started by sophomore guard Jayla Anderson’s layup and capped by senior guard Peyton Weaver’s 2 of 3 free throws after getting fouled on a 3-point attempt to make it 54-9 with 4:14 left in the game. Weaver scored 10 of her game-leading 12 points in the second half, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range.
Davidson and Scarlett followed with 10 points apiece, and Duckworth, junior Erica Smith, and Anderson each scored six. Smith was the only one of the starters to play in the second half and she only played a couple of minutes adding a layup.
Despite the blowout, Bryant hit just 11 of 22 from the line, while hitting 24 of 52 (46 percent) from the field. Fair shot 5 of 40 (13 percent) from the field. The Lady Hornets out rebounded Fair 34 to 19. Duckworth had four assists and three steals to lead the team and senior Hayley Murphy had seven rebounds for the team lead.
Next up for the Lady Hornets are the Sheridan Lady Yellowjackets at home.
“We have a tough-tough one against Sheridan on Tuesday,” Matthews said. “It’s a good win for our kids, especially after the heartbreaker on Tuesday.”
