SHERIDAN – Up by eight points early in the second half, the Bryant Lady Hornets couldn’t hold on as they lost 56-51 to the Sheridan Lady Jackets in 7A/6A South Conference play in Sheridan on Tuesday night.
Junior guard Jakeria Otey scored a season-high 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the field, and senior forward Aubree Allen double-doubled with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but despite playing solid defense, Bryant couldn’t stop Sheridan’s Kadesha Cooper down the stretch in the loss.
“Cooper played really well,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “She hit some contested shots. She kind of got them going offensively.”
Senior guard Peyton Weaver hit two threes in the first quarter on her way to 10 points as Bryant would lead 21-13 after one. Otey would score all six of Bryant’s points in the second quarter as the Lady Hornets (5-9, 1-3 South) would lead 27-21 at the half.
Otey would score her eighth and 10th straight points for Bryant putting the Lady Hornets up 31-24 with 6:55 left in the third, but the Lady Jackets would battle back. Consecutive offensive rebounds and put backs brought Sheridan within 31-28. Allen would get consecutive buckets for the Lady Hornets to make it 35-30 Bryant at the 3:40 mark of the third quarter, but Cooper would hit a three and would get a steal and a layup to tie it up at 35-apiece before Sheridan led 40-39 after three.
Sheridan would take a 52-43 lead halfway through the fourth, but the Lady Hornets would fight back to get within 52-51 on Otey’s only 3-point attempt of the game with 58 seconds left, but the Lady Jackets would hit 4 of 4 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
“I was really proud of our kids’ effort tonight,” Matthews said. “I thought we made some improvement. We have to make sure we keep improving, keep growing, keep building on this; continue to limit our mistakes. I thought are kids competed hard and executed fairly well, they just made a few plays down the stretch.”
Weaver finished with 12 points for Bryant and the Lady Hornets will host Texarkana at Bryant Gym on Friday. Cooper finished with 22 for Sheridan.
