Delbert Dwain Hairston, age 85, of Benton passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, from complications of a stroke. Dewain was born Dec. 9, 1927, to the late Walter and Una Hairston of Lincoln County.
He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Willerene Butler, Laverne Hathcote, Frances Blakely and Elsie Austin; brothers, Louis Hairston, Dudley Hairston and Doyle Blythe; and a son, Dr. R. Keith Hairston of Texarkana.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Helen Craig Hairston; a son, KentÂ (Darla) Hairston; a daughter, Sherri (Tim) Poe; grandchildren, Rachel (Bryan) Garner, Ryan Hairston, Keely (Andrew) Norman, Timmy (Ashley) Poe, Gillian (Jeremy) Heatley; a great-granddaughter, Linlee Garner; and several nieces and nephews.
Dwain attended Bryant Schools and served in the Merchant Marines and U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an avid runner having completed the Boston Marathon in 1983.
He was a member of the Longhills Golf Association and was a longtime volunteer of the Junior Golf
Program. Dwain retired from Reynolds Metals Co. after 35 years of service and was a faithful member of Northside Church of Christ in Benton.
Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, at Ashby Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ashby Funeral Home with Jim Gardner officiating. Burial will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
