Doris LaVerne Willis

Doris LaVerne Willis, 88, a resident of Benton, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 7.  She was born March 26, 1923, to the late Conway Roark and Birdie Elizabeth Runyan Roark. 
LaVerne was raised in the Baptist Orphanage now located in Texarkana.  During those years she was chosen to sing on the radio with trios and quartets and in various churches in the Hot Springs area.
LaVerne and her late husband, J.W. Willis, owned and operated The Community Market Grocery Store and the Friendly Butcher in Benton.  She retired from Southwestern Bell/AT&T, where she worked as a telephone operator and later plotted maps for underground cable.
She will be missed by her sister, Inez Allen in Prescott; two daughters, Connie Willis and Chere Turner and husband Sid; a son, John Willis and wife Valerie; and grandchildren, Lyndsey and Matthew Willis.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, in the chapel of Roller-Ballard Funeral Home with Sid Turner officiating.  Burial will follow at Sharon Cemetery. 
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9.
