Events center issues on tonight's agenda for Benton City Council

July 9, 2012

Several matters related to the construction of an events center will be on the Benton City Council agenda for its 7 p.m. meeting today at Benton Municipal Complex.
Among these is an ordinance authorizing the issuance of hotel and restaurant gross receipts tax bonds for the purpose of financing all or a portion of the costs of capital improvements and pledging collection of the city's 1.5 percent hotel and restaurant gross receipts tax to pay the principal and interest on the bonds.
Another ordinance will waive construction-related fees for the center and a third ordinance will waive construction-related fees for the hotel that is to be built in conjunction with the facility.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new events center took place last week. The facility is to be located in Hickory Square, near the Tinseltown movie theater.
In other matters, Benton Police Lt. Michael Kassel is to be recognized as Employee of the Month for May and Robin Polk and Gil Carpenter for additional employee service awards. Both are 15-year employees.
In other matters, the council is scheduled to hear the third reading of an ordinance amending customer service rules and regulations of the cities, which involves designating specified public information employees for departments.
Another matter the council plans to consider is an ordinance repealing a prior ordinance that will prevent the discharge of residential and industrial waste from waste haulers into the Benton wastewater system.
Also on the agenda are ordinances adjusting the budget to accept grant awards for the police department and to allocate funds for communications facilities and equipment.
This issue was discussed several months ago, but the council delayed action on it.
