BENTON – Benton Panthers senior soccer player Michi Forbess signed a letter of intent to play for the Tigers of Ouachita Baptist University (Arkadelphia) at the Benton Athletic Sports Complex field house on Friday.
Forbess is a midfielder for the Panthers, which finished 16-2-1 and lost 2-1 in the 6A State Tournament quarterfinals to Siloam Springs, and is Benton’s all-time leader in career assists with 21. Benton soccer Coach Bobby Winn said Forbess’ understanding of the game is second-to-none.
“His knowledge of the game,” Winn said when asked about Forbess’ most important asset. “He’s literally the field general.”
“Especially in soccer, you turn them lose those 40 minutes, there’s no stoppage of play or time to set up a play or call anything. When they go out there they have to know it and it goes through him. He’s directing everybody that he can.”
Forbess, who will study kinesiology at OBU, was an all-conference selection as a sophomore and was an all-stater his junior season for the Panthers, and will joining a Tigers team which went 5-9-1 last season. Ouachita Baptist is a member of the Great American Conference (NCAA Division II).
Forbess agrees his understanding of the game is what he brings to the table for the Panthers and said OBU is the right place for him.
“They have everything I want in a college and the opportunity to play soccer there is something I’m really excited about,” Forbess said. “Academically and spiritually, I think they’re the perfect fit.”
“Michi is a great example of a dedicated student-athlete, “Winn said. “He is a leader on and off the field with his actions. He gets the team in position and is basically a coach on the field.”
