Group names SMH doctor as year's top physician

June 22, 2012

Dr. Scott Archer, Saline Memorial Emergency Department physician, was recently honored by the AR SAVES program by being named Physician of the Year. With Archer at left is Julie Hall-Barrow, education director for the UAMS Center for Distance Health and former state Sen. Bobby Glover.

A Saline Memorial Hospital physician has brought honor to the hospital as well as the community.
Dr. Scott Archer was recently recognized by the AR SAVES Program as Physician of the Year. The award was presented at the AR SAVES annual meeting at the Clinton Library in Little Rock.
Archer is a board-certified emergency medicine physician at SMH, where he serves as the chief of emergency medicine and medical director of the Saline Memorial Ambulance Service.
He also serves as the physician lead between SMH and the AR SAVES Program.
SMH has been a part of the AR SAVES program since 2010. Arkansas SAVES (Stroke Assistance Through Virtual Emergency Support) reportedly uses a high-tech video communications system to help provide immediate, life-saving treatments to stroke patients. It links emergency room doctors at participating hospitals like SMH to specially trained vascular neurologists via live, two-way video, 24 hours a day.
The neurologists reportedly can advise whether to administer tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), which can greatly increase a patient’s chances of recovery.
The AR SAVES staff that voted on the award commented that Archer is “always very professional, he practices medicine very efficiently, he is always in control no matter what the situation, he always keeps a level head and he never gets over excited."
The staff also said: "He treats staff with respect, and the staff always feels secure with Dr. Archer working and has confidence in his ability to deal with any injury or illness that may arise. He practices what he preaches.”
“This professionalism and compassion and his dedication to providing access to stroke care through AR SAVES is why we chose Dr. Archer for the Physician of the Year award,” said Julie Hall-Barrow, education director for the UAMS Center for Distance Health. “This award is an annual award that goes to an ER physician that has shown dedication and support not only for the AR SAVES program but for the staff that implements the program within the hospital.”
"This was a totally unexpected honor,” said Archer. “The truth is that without the great staff at SMH and the entire Arkansas SAVES network, the ability to provide this level of expertise to our patients would not be possible. I have the privilege of working alongside some of the best nurses and ancillary personnel in the state. It is their hard work and dedication that makes this program such a success."
