Harmony Grove bests Bauxite
HASKELL – The Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals held the Bauxite Lady Miners to three hits on their way to a 10-0 five-inning victory on Friday at Harmony Grove.
The Lady Cardinals (6-2) scored one run in the second inning and two in the third before breaking the game open in the fourth inning with six runs.
“[The Lady Cardinals] did some things I’ve been looking for them to do all season,” Harmony Grove Coach Sammie Massey said. “I was very pleased. They hit the ball well and played good defense. Overall, I thought we played well.”
Senior Macy Coffee hit a two-run home run to center field in the bottom of the third inning to make it 3-0 and finished the day 1 for 3.
Bauxite (2-3) lost its second consecutive game and hasn't hit the ball well of late.
“We played better than Tuesday (12-1 loss to Magnet Cove), we’re just having a hard time at the plate right now,” Bauxite Coach Wes Mode said. “We had three hits. We’re struggling. We struck out six times.
“We seemed to hit the ball to them and when they hit it, they hit it to where we weren’t. They hit it when they had to. When they had people on base, they hit it.”
For the Lady Miners, senior Bethany Edwards went 1 for 3, and junior Denise Harp and senior Taylor Hatten went 1 for 2.
In the loss to Magnet Cove, the Lady Miners had six errors in the game. They had two errors in the last inning against the Lady Cardinals, but that was it.
“We actually played error-free for four and two-third innings,” Mode said. “We did a lot better [Friday] night. I was proud of our aggressiveness. Right now, we’re just struggling at the plate. That’s the big thing.”
For Harmony Grove, Molly White went 3 for 3, Laura Britt went 2 for 4, Kristen Dempsey went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, Holly Drombetta went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Torie Simmons went 1 for 2 with two RBIs.
Massey said she was pleased with the offense and defense as they had been struggling in both areas lately.
“We haven’t been hitting as consistent as I would like us to and we’re still trying to figure out defensively what we need to do,” she said. “They’ve been doing good.”
Dempsey was the starting pitcher for the Lady Cardinals. She picked up the win giving up three hits and four walks, and struck out six.
Both teams get spring break off and play the following Monday, March 26. Bauxite has Robinson in Little Rock and Harmony Grove has Glen Rose at home.
