Harmony Grove girls fall in tournament

The Harmony Grove senior high girls basketball team got back to work on Tuesday when they traveled to Carlisle for the Carlisle Christmas Tournament. The Lady Cardinals got things under way against Maumelle, but the outcome was not very good as they fell 55-39 Tuesday morning.

“It was a sloppy, early-morning game,” head Lady Cardinals’ Coach John White said. “Both teams finally settled in later on.”

The Lady Cardinals found themselves in a hole after the first quarter by a score of 8-3. WIth a little more scoring in the second, the Lady Cardinals were still trailing heading into the half, 23-13. Maumelle continued to get better as the game progressed on into the second half, putting up the first 20-plus performance in a quarter of the game, adding 21 while only allowing 10 to the Lady Cardinals to take a 44-23 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Cardinals were able to outscore Maumelle in the final eight minutes, but it was not enough as they fell 55-39 in the opening round of the tournament.

Senior guard Morgan Ramsey led the Lady Cardinals with 11 points, followed by Torie Simmons with seven.

“Maumelle really got out and pressured us,” White said. “We didn’t make them pay for that by attacking the basket like we should have. We felt like we had opportunities to score but we didn’t attack enough.”

The Lady Cardinals will go back to Carlisle on Thursday to take on one of four teams, depending on the outcomes over the next couple of days. Opening tip is set for 12:30 p.m. on Thursday for the Lady Cardinals.

For White, there are still a lot of things to work on between now and Thursday. “We are going to work on competing,” White said. “We have a tendency to put our heads down when things don’t go well for us and we have got to learn to play through that and keep ourselves in a ball game.”
