The Harmony Grove Football Cardinals opened the pre-season on Thursday night with the Second Annual Red and White game at Cardinal Stadium.
Only two years into a football program and the Cardinals are already looking like a somewhat mature football team.
“Last year no one could hear and pads wee popping in the stands,” said Assistant Head Coach Benji White.
“We want to hit people this year.”
The Cardinals started the scrimmage with a nice 50-yard pass from starting quarterback Matt Hollson.
The White team followed the drive up with a punch-it-in touchdown from five yards out by running back Austin Traylor. But the focus for the Cardinals was not who could score more points or who had the most stats.
It was about contact and making sure the other side of the ball knows what it is like to be hit.
They also worked on running the ball a lot to make sure that blocks are in place and that holes are being hit.
“Football is not a contact sport — it is a collision sport — and we had some collisions (during the scrimmage),” White said.
“The good thing is that our kids popped back up and were ready for some more. That’s very encouraging heading into this season.”
White also said that Head Coach Red Parker could be on the sidelines as early as next week.
“The heat really poses a problem for him,” said White.
“We hope that he can sit in his golf cart and ride around during practice.”
White also said that the team and staff plan on having Parker back on the sidelines for the start of the season.
With Parker being away from the field, the kids are hoping that he can make a full recovery and be back with the team quickly.
Parker had heart surgury during the off-season.
The Cardinals will have one more pre-season scrimmage before starting the season.
Cutter Morning Star will be visiting on Aug. 25 to give the Cardinals a look at something other than their own team.
Game time is set for 6 p.m.
The Cardinals kick off the regular season on Sept. 2 against their old town rivals from Poyen.
The opening kick has been set for 7 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
