The Miners beat St. Joseph 8-7 Thursday thanks to a walk-off home run by senior Kyler Hickey in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Bauxite (11-9, 2-3 4A-7) travels to face conference leader Nashville today. Head coach Michael Mattox said, “I know we can play with them.
“We just have to play solid defense and have a big effort on the mound.”
Sophomore Chris Revas is scheduled to start as pitcher today with junior Ryan Weng, who only threw 76 pitches during Tuesday’s outing against Pulaski Robinson, a likely relief, Mattox said.
Sophomore Tyler Willis started Thursday against St. Joseph, but was relieved by senior Austin Harris in the first inning. Harris went into the seventh inning.
Mattox said Harris “struggled getting ahead in the count and walked a few too many, but overall he gave us a chance to win and got us out of a couple of jams.”
Ahed 7-5 in the top of the seventh inning, Harris walked a batter and was relieved by Hickey, who walked the next batter. Both runs would score, forcing the game into extra innings after Bauxite was held scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
Luckily, after holding St. Joseph scoreless in the eighth, Hickey hit a walk-off home run to win the game.
“It was a slow game,” Mattox said. “We really weren’t in the tempo.”
The Miners’ game today against Nashville begins at 4:30 p.m.
