Hornets win again; Girls fall but then get back on top

August 24, 2012

Both of the 2012 Bryant High School golf teams have started the year strong. Coming into Monday, the boys already had two first-place finishes under their belt to go with two fourth places. On Monday, the Hornets added another top finish to their stats when they played a dual tournament with Conway on the road.
The match was not a walk in the park, though. “We played pretty well and ended up coming back after tying the match at 129 (after nine holes),” head coach Keith Dale said. Top golfers Tyler Green and Austin Harmon led Bryant to the victory after defeating Conway on a single playoff hole, the 10th hole of the day.
Harmon finished with a final score of 36 while Green shot a 37. Drew Castleberry, the team’s third golfer, shot a 37 as well.
The Lady Hornets match on Monday was not as great as the boys as they fell to Conway. But Dale didn’t put too much into the defeat, especially since Bryant was going up against possibly the greatest girls' golfer in the state in Summer Rochelle.
“We had some good scores,” Dale said.
“It’s tough to beat her when she is pretty much beating everyone on the golf course.” Rochelle shot a 4-under 32.
Peyton Weaver shot a 39, followed by Savanna Cathey with a 48 and Abigail added a 53 for a total of 140 in the loss to Conway.
Bryant and Conway played a 9-hole match because of a late start time due to it being the first day of school.
The Lady Hornets played Thursday as well, competing in a girls-only tournament at First Tee in Little Rock against Benton and Mt. St. Mary’s. Bryant got back on top with a first-place finish. Weaver led the team with a strong 37. Cathey followed with a 47 and McGee rounded out the top three with a 49. Bryant won with an overall score of 133.
Both teams will hit the course once again on Tuesday at Hurricane Country Club and Golf Course in Bryant. Tee-time is set for 3:30 p.m.
