Harmony Grove continued their quest to another conference title on Tuesday when they played host to Cutter Morning Star. Unfortunately, only one team was to show up against the Eagles.
The Lady Cardinals started the night for Harmony Grove and on a very high note, especially for their confidence, beating the Lady Eagles 45-32 to get to 2-4 in conference play.
The Lady Cardinals opened the first quarter with a 16-4 run heading into the second, thanks big in part to their senior leadership who had 10 of the first quarter points for the Lady Cardinals.
"I thought we put some pressure on [Cutter] early and that really helped us get that lead," head Lady Cardinals Coach John White said. "That just builds confidence going deeper into the ball game."
Cutter began to loosen up a little in the second quarter, adding 10 points. But the Lady Cardinals were not going anywhere as senior Morgan Ramsey continued her high percentage shooting from the floor as the Lady Cardinals pulled out to a big 26-14 halftime lead.
Cutter began to cut into the Lady Cardinals' lead early in the third quarter, moving the score to 30-18. Fortunately, for the Lady Cardinals, they were able to match nearly every bucket put up by Cutter throughout the whole game. Back-to-back buckets from the Lady Cardinals pushed the score to 35-18 before Cutter hit a field goal to end the third quarter at 35-20.
A 7-2 run for Harmony Grove to start the fourth quarter gave the Lady Cardinals their biggest lead of the game at 42-22. A 7-0 run by Cutter pulled the score to within 12 midway through the fourth. Then a huge three from Monica Armstrong with a few minutes left put the Lady Cardinals back up 15 and ultimately put the game out of reach for Cutter.
Cutter did add two free throws to end the game at 45-32, advantage Lady Cardinals.
The Lady Cardinals have been known for their turnovers this season, but Tuesday, Harmony Grove committed only eight in the first half. "We continue to get better and continue to turn it over less," White said. "We are starting to learn what it takes."
Ramsey led the Lady Cardinals with 11 points and also shot 71 percent from the floor. Macy Coffee followed with nine points.
The Lady Cardinals out shot Cutter 38 percent to 30. They also out rebounded the Lady Eagles 26-16 including 13 offensive boards.
With the win, the Lady Cardinals take much need confidence into Friday's big matchup against Glen Rose on the board. Opening tip is set for 6:30 p.m.
