BAUXITE - On Friday, two girls’ basketball teams with equally dismal records in 7-4A action met up for a game. Both teams recently suffered similar fates against Malvern. Arkansas Baptist used the first few minutes of this game to secure a lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the night. It would be the Lady Eagles of Arkansas Baptist leaving with a hard-fought prize, winning by a score of 56 - 43.
Bauxite (8-8, 1-5 7-4A) won the jump but it was Arkansas Baptist which would score first. Holly Willmon got the Lady Miners their first two when she posted up from the bottom right side. Carley Willmon later got the Lady Miners their other two points for the first period when she fought for the ball amid a scramble of Eagles players below the Miners’ basket and went up for a 7-foot jumper. The Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Miners during the first eight minutes by a score of 9-4.
Arkansas Baptist began the second eight minutes with a 3-point basket and a blocked shot. Lindie Thompson of Bauxite then assisted teammate Allison Tackett with a quick pass below the basket for Bauxite’s third score of the game. A couple minutes later, Tackett was fouled and made both free throws. Tackett finished the half with a 3-pointer from the right. Tackett got all seven of the Lady Miners’ second quarter points. Though, her efforts alone would not be sufficient to give Bauxite the lead. The teams left for their respective locker rooms at halftime with the Lady Eagles leading by a score of 22-11.
Bauxite’s Allison Tackett began the second half by resuming the same level of play that she had displayed during the first. She immediately got the Lady Miners a rebound and then made two free throws. Jessica Sorvillo then got the Lady Miners their second three of the game followed later by another post up from Willmon. Another free throw by Tackett brought the score to 31-19 at the end of three.
Bauxite put up a total of 24 points during the last eight minutes. Bauxite’s Faby Mendoza played strong for the Miners during the last few moments managing to grab two rebounds, two jumpers, and a three for the Lady Miners during the last few minutes of the game.
The difference in this game was the Lady Eagles’ two post players. Arkansas Baptist’s inside players blocked the Lady Miners shots. Bauxite was also outrebounded. The Lady Miners did take better care of the basketball than they had in previous games and therefore did not have as many turnovers. The Lady Eagles outscored the Miners by only two points during the second half of play. If it had not been for a difficult second quarter, the Lady Miners would have remained in contention at the conclusion of this bout. Bauxite gets a second chance at Arkansas Baptist in three weeks. Until then, the Lady Miners will Tuesday at Arkadelphia.
