Lady Hornet sets new school record

April 4, 2011

Bryant's Alexis Royal set a new triple-jump school record of 37 feet, 3 inches during the Russellville Cyclone Relays held Friday.

The Bryant Lady Hornets finished in fifth place Friday night at the Russellville Cyclone Relays.

Bryant scored 61 points to finish behind team champion Lake Hamilton (80 points), North Little Rock (78), Fort Smith Northside (72) and Cabot (72). In all, 23 schools competed.

Highlighting the Lady Hornets’ performance was sophomore Alexis Royal, who scored a team high 30 points. Royal set a new Bryant school record with her winning leap in the triple jump.

Her jump of 37 feet, 3 inches not only broke the school record, but also set a new Cyclone Relay meet record. The mark also is currently the leading triple jump in the state this season.

Adding to that performance, Royal took second place in the long jump (16'8), second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.2 seconds) and was a member of both the 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams.

Coach Danny Westbrook said, “Alexis Royal is just an amazing talent. She has scored 30 points the last two meets, and then add to that her awesome performance in the triple jump.

"She really works hard and is so competitive. Coach Beth Solomon, our jumps coach, is doing a great job with her.”

Sophomore distance runners Hannah Raney and Stacy Emmerling also added big points for the Lady Hornets. Raney scored 14 points, finishing second in the 1,600-meter run (5 minutes 50 seconds) and fourth in the 3,200-meter run (12:26). Emmerling scored eight points with her fourth-place finish in the 1,600-meter run (5:54) and her seventh-place finish in the 800‑meter run (2:34). Both were members of the fourth place 3,200-meter relay team.

Other scorers for the Lady Hornets were Lauren Magneson in the high jump (eighth place, 4'10); the 400-meter relay team of Sarah Evans, Gabrielle Allen, Bailee Seelinger and Royal (third, 53.2); the 1,600-meter relay team of Royal, Seelinger, Kiana Thomas and Candice Ball (fifth, 4:31); and the 3,200-meter relay team of Lauren Stiles, Raney, Stacie Waite and Emmerling (fourth, 10:58).

Westbrook said the team was a "little short-handed" without Brianna White, who scored 27 points at the Hornet Relays two weeks ago.

"She tweaked a hamstring this week in practice, and we decided to play it safe and hold her out at this meet," he said. "Hopefully, we will have her back next week at Cabot. I feel like with her in the lineup we would have had a good shot at the team championship.”
