Lady Hornet soccer team earns victory
The Bryant Lady Hornet’s defeated the Van Buren Lady Pointers 4-1 in 7A conference soccer action Monday night at Van Buren.
The girls were lackadaisical in the cold light rain and 49 degree weather as the score was 0-0 at the half. Bryant’s first three scores in the second half came on free kicks.
Tara Hendricks put Bryant on the board when she connected on a 47-yard free kick that caromed off the keeper for a 1-0 lead with 21:43 left in the game.
“It was cold, it was wet, it wasn’t our best game but it was a win,” head coach Julie Long said. “That’s about all I’ve got to say about it. We kind of came out and lagged. As a team, we’re getting better each time we play and we took care of business.”
Shelby Gartrell scored on a 30-yard free kick that went over the head of the goalie with 15:40 left in the game for a 2-0 score. Sister Bailey Gartrell connected on a 12-yard free kick to make it 3-0 with 5:27 left in the game.
Ashlen Baughtman finished out the scoring for Bryant when she hit a point blank six-yard shot inside the box for a 4-0 score with 4:00 left in the game.
Van Buren’s Nancy Corona hit a smash that slid through Kaitlyn Miller’s hands with 2:22 left in the game, resulting in the 4-1 final score.
Among those for Bryant making shots at the goal but missed were: Lexie Balisterri, Hendricks, McKenzie Adams, Bailey and Shelby Gartrell, London Abernathy and Katie Moore.
In earlier junior varsity action, the Lady Hornets also won 4-1 behind goals by Baughtman, Taylor Bryant and two by Kara Taylor.
A big conference game against Conway will be held Tuesday at Conway.
“We’ve got to get ready for tomorrow night, (against Conway); that’s our biggest game,” Long said.
