Lady Hornets battle back for victory

November 24, 2012

BRYANT- After trailing nearly the whole game, the Bryant Lady Hornets battled back to a hard-fought 35-34 victory over Mount Saint Mary Academy on Tuesday night at the Bryant Gym. The Lady Hornets improve to 2-1 on the year.
“I thought our kids played well,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “We found a way down the stretch to fight back.”
Bryant was led by junior guard Dezarea Duckworth, who finished the night with 20 points and grabbed six rebounds. Senior post player Whitney Meyer played a huge part in the rebounding game with eight boards to go along with two points.
The Lady Hornets trailed 10-4 after the first quarter, but both offenses heated up as Mount Saint Mary led 22-16 at the half. Matthews credited Mount Saint Mary on their pressure in the first half.
“[They] did some stuff to give us some problems,” he said. “I thought they were aggressive and attacked us well,” Matthews said. Matthews praised his girls for their resiliency throughout the game, “I think it’s a tribute to our kids and how hard we have been working in practice and the commitment that they have.”
In the second half, the Lady Hornets outscored Mount Saint Mary 19-12 led by pressure defense and some forced turnovers. Duckworth caught fire in the second half scoring six times in the second half.
“She made some plays offensively,” Matthews said of Duckworth. “[We] tried to get her in some space and make some plays. She stepped and made a lot of plays down the stretch.”
Bryant closed the gap to 29-26 at the end of the third quarter to set up the decisive fourth. The Lady Hornets trailed throughout most of the quarter until about a minute to play when Duckworth gave the Lady Hornets the lead for good on a shot from the inside with a nice move. Mount Saint Mary had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but the desperation 3-pointer bounced off the rim and the Lady Hornets celebrated their hard-earned victory.
Along with Duckworth, Bryant senior guard Logan Davis added nine points and three boards. Senior forward Courtney Davidson added four points and three rebounds including a clutch offensive board off a missed free throw in the fourth quarter to help set up the victory.
