Lady Hornets build up team, beat Van Buren

After getting swept by Conway on Tuesday night to snap a six-game conference winning streak, the Bryant Lady Hornets' volleyball team responded with a sweep of their own, defeating the Van Buren Lady Pointers 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-8) Thursday night on the road.
"Last night was an amazing night for our girls," Bryant Coach Beth Solomon said. "We spent Wednesday doing team-building activities instead of really focusing on skills.
"After Conway Tuesday night, we realized that our girls needed some really strong team-bonding activities – they have the skills they need."
Solomon said that the team has not been successful of late because they were not playing as one unit, instead playing as six separate units on the court. She said Wednesday's practice made the difference in the team's victory against the Lady Pointers (9-9, 6-7 7A Central).
"The girls played for each other last night," Solomon said. "They each wore someone else's jersey and gave their stats to that one person, so the stats may seem a little off to anyone not on the team."
The Lady Hornets (11-4, 10-3 7A Central) used their normal rotation, but the stats went to other players on the team to promote team-building.
"Our defense had a stellar night," Solomon said. "We refused to let a ball hit the ground [Thursday] night and refused to let Van Buren get any cheap shots on us. The girls were ready to win in three, despite it being Van Buren's senior night.
"We played smart, placed the ball where there were holes and we were successful," she said. "I am extremely proud to be the Bryant volleyball coach."
The Lady Hornets' junior varsity team also won, defeating the Lady Pointers' JV 2-1 (21-25, 25-15, 15-8). The Bryant JV's record is 10-5 overall and 8-5 in conference play.
