Lady Panthers on a roll
The Benton Lady Panthers won their seventh consecutive match and improved to 4-0 in conference with a 3-0 sweep of the Texarkana Lady Razorbacks in Texarkana on Thursday. Benton took the match 25-21, 25-17 and 26-24.
“I thought we played well,” Benton Coach Brandy Chumley said. “Overall we stayed up. We try not to give them too many points in a row and that’s our game. We had the lead and we would let them back in.”
The Lady Panthers (7-2, 4-0 7A/6A South) were up 14-9 in the final set before letting Texarkana back in it to take the lead, but Benton would fight back and take the game for the sweep.
“We led the third game and we let them back in it,” Chumley said. “We just kind of let down. We were hitting the ball out. We just went through a short time where we would hit the ball out or shank it. It just seemed like we had too many errors right there in a row.
Of course, with a sweep, there had to be good play by the Lady Panthers.
“We started every game strong and we haven’t been doing that, so that’s a positive,” Chumley said.
Senior Alex Williams and Allison Reynolds led the team with nine kills apiece, junior Jenni Hastings had four kills in senior Erin Jackson’s absence due to injury, junior Xandra Lock had three and senior Courtland Kaufholtz and junior Stacy Morgan had two each.
Senior Sarah Carter had 10 assists to lead the Lady Panthers with sophomore Braxton Chumley following with nine and senior Alicia Sandage, who also led the team with three aces, with six. Kaufholtz had nine digs to lead the team and Lock had six, and sophomore Ashlie Dintleman had three solo and three assisted blocks in the match to lead Benton.
The Lady Panthers will be facing their rival Bryant Hornets on Thursday at Benton Arena, but not before Benton takes on Sheridan away.
“I’ve heard they’re kind of down, but we can never take that for granted,” Chumley said of Sheridan. “We have to work on us and play our game. And it being an away game, everybody plays up for us, so you never know.
“Bryant will be coming into our place. They beat us in the benefit game, so we’re going to have to be on our A-game and we’re going to have to have everyone stepping up and playing together. It’ll be a good game for everybody to play well.
“We’re on a roll right now. Each game we’re trying to play better and I think we’re starting to do that. We’re trying to come together. We’re trying to eliminate injuries, take care of ourselves and get rest when we need it.”
The Benton junior varsity was also victorious defeating Texarkana’s JV 2-0 (25-12, 25-5).
Sophomore Nakiya Baxter had four kills and Chumley had three. Junior Molly Brannon had five assists in the first game with sophomore Taylor Lindberg adding four for the match. Brannon added four aces and sophomore Kendall Meadors had five digs with Chumley and Lindberg each with two.
