Man arrested for allegedly killing dog

June 27, 2014

Paul Daugherty, 26, of Benton.

Paul Daugherty, 26, of Benton was arrested Tuesday for allegedly killing a dog earlier this year.

On May 31, Benton police officers received a report about a possible animal abuse incident at Lyle Park.

During the investigation, officers found evidence that Daugherty allegedly killed his dog in January.

"According to an opinion from a veterinarian, it appeared the dog suffered blunt force trauma consistent with being bludgeoned to death," said Lt. Kevin Russell, Benton Police Department spokesperson.

On Tuesday, Daugherty was arrested on an aggravated animal cruelty charge. He was released Wednesday on a $10,000 signature bond, said Lt. Scott Courtney, Saline County Sheriff's Office spokesperson.

"This is still an on-going investigation and additional charges could be forthcoming," Russell said.

If anyone has information about this incident, he or she can contact the Benton Police Department at 501-778-1171.
