The Bryant Area Chamber of Commerce will host the ninth annual Monster Madness at Mills Park today, starting at 5:30 p.m. and continuing until dark.
"This started as a benefit for the Boys & Girls Club, but it is also a response to people asking for a community celebration for Halloween," said chamber Executive Director Rae Ann Fields. "This way, people don't have to go out into neighborhoods where they don't know anyone."
This year's celebration will include trick-or-treating and trunk-or-treating and a hayride that leads through the Haunted Trail. The trail is intended for ages 12 and up; no walking is permitted on the trail and access is $5.
There will also be a costume contest, directly followed by a free concert, sponsored by Geyer Springs Baptist Church. Bluegrass band Runaway Planet will play at 7:15 p.m. on the Mills Park stage.
Trunk or Treat is also new to the event. Individuals and those business that do not have booths can plan to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters out of a trunk. More information is available at the Chamber of Commerce at 501-847-4702.
In addition, Bryant firefighters, using chocolate donated by Harps Food Stores, will make s'mores for the crowd.
Bryant Police Department will also be present with its mobile command trailer.
Metropolitan Bank has provided strobe lights, which will add ambience to the haunted trail, according to a press release from the chamber. The riders on the hay trailers — with hay donated by Sutherlands — will witness scenes by the staff of Iberia Bank, Heartland Bank, Arvest Bank, Metropolitan Bank, Saline Memorial Hospital, Saline County Arts Project, Boys & Girls Club and Bryant High School ROTC.
A costume contest, for children 10 and younger only, will be held at 6 p.m.
The Boys & Girls Club will host Munchkinland for younger children on the tennis courts. Access to Munchkinland is $3. Games and inflatable activities will be provided. Hot dogs and drinks will be sold.
Proceeds will go to the Bryant Boys & Girls Club.
If rained out, the event will be rescheduled for Oct. 30. After that, no rain date and no refunds are planned, according to the press release.
