A former Bryant teacher is suspected of sexual assault of a minor.
Courtney Speer, 31, allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old Bryant High School student, according to Benton police. Speer resigned Monday from her position as 9th grade English teacher at Bryant High School.
The case is a joint investigation with the Benton and Bryant Police Departments, because incidents occurred in both jurisdictions, on school property and at Speer's Benton home.
At the time of the alleged incidents, Speer was employed as a teacher at Bryant High School.
According to Bryant police, investigators were notified Monday by school resource officers of the alleged sexual assault.
Police say the student in question gave statements to investigators that he and Speer engaged in sexual intercourse for the first time in June, in the Bryant High School parking lot inside her vehicle. The student told investigators this happened on four different occasions in the parking lot. He was a student of Speer’s when he was in the 9th grade.
According to police, Speer had agreed to meet with investigators Tuesday but did not uphold the agreement and has since retained an attorney. A warrant has been issued for her arrest, and she is now set to turn herself in at the Saline County Jail Wednesday morning.
Authorities say Speer is facing several counts of sexual assault in the first degree, a Class A felony.
This is an ongoing investigation and further charges could be forthcoming, according to police.
