The Sheridan Yellowjackets went down to White Hall and hung on for a win, defeating the Bulldogs 13-8. The Yellowjackets gave up 363 total yards to the Bulldogs in the low-scoring game, but was plus six in the turnover department, including four turnovers on downs, to take the victory.
“It was ugly, but it was a win,” Sheridan Coach Louis Campbell said. “That’s all that counts. “
After shutting out the Arkadelphia Badgers 10-0 last week, the Yellowjackets defense came up big again when senior free safety Kurt Stinnett recovered a fumble and took it in for a 5-yard touchdown to put Sheridan up 7-0 with 7:54 left in the first quarter.
After a 49-yard Kane Fitzgerald punt to put the Badgers at their own 31-yard line. A 29-yard completion and a 15-yard personal foul penalty against the Yellowjackets led to a 25-yard TD run with just under a minute remaining in the first half. White Hall ran in a two-point conversion to make it an 8-7 Bulldogs’ lead.
“I think we played good the first half,” Campbell said. “They hit some long passes on us in the second half, but I think the bottom line is, we didn‘t quit, we didn‘t give up.
“We made some first downs when we had to and made some stops when we had to,” he continued. “Our kicking game was solid except for a missed field goal. It was good enough to pull one out.”
Senior wide receiver Josh Miller caught all three passes from Sheridan quarterback Dylan Flores, including a 77-yard TD pass to make it 13-8. Flores’ two-point conversion pass fell incomplete with 7:03 remaining in the third quarter.
“It was a slant over the middle to him and he split the defenders and there wasn’t anybody that was going to one-hand or arm tackle him,” Campbell said about Miller’s TD catch. “And that was a big play for us. It was the difference in the football game.”
Miller finished with 95 yards on his three catches and Flores threw 3 for 12 for 95 yards. Sophomore running back Braden Lunday carried 22 times for 82 yards.
The Bulldogs made it to the Yellowjackets’ 8-yard line in the middle of the third quarter, but Billy Wicker intercepted White Hall’s pass to end its drive.
“Any time you can stop the run, you can put them behind the eight ball,” Campbell said. “I think we did a good job of stopping the run. They had some long passes in some situations and we’d get a turnover after that.
“We had just enough defense, just enough offense and just enough kicking to pull out a win,” he said. “I think the thing that stood out was our will to win. We hung on and hung on, and hung on, and finally, fortunately that clock ran out.”
