After losing to the Harrison Golden Goblins 28-10 this past Friday, Sheridan Yellowjackets’ coach Louis Campbell said there were positives despite his team giving up six turnovers in the opening game of the season. The Yellowjackets take on the Arkadelphia Badgers at Yellowjackets Stadium Friday.
“The positives were many in spite of the turnovers,” Campbell wrote in his message at Sheridanfootball.com. “Micah Thompson’s 40-yard field goal at the first of the game was a big momentum play for us. Josh Miller caught 7 passes for 88 yards. Forty-nine of those yards were after contact was first initiated.Â
“Our coverage teams were excellent, especially Mike Moore’s kickoff coverage unit,” he continued. “Their punt returner and kickoff returner had 14 yards total all night. Nick Ware punted the ball well and Micah Parker kicked off well. Defensively, we held them on 9 of 12 third/fourth down attempts. That is excellent.”Â
Harrison quarterback Tate Stokes threw for three touchdowns and ran for one and Campbell said Sheridan’ goal was to stop him, which didn’t happen.
“He makes you miss and gets rid of the ball when you get pressure on him,” Campbell said after the game. “Our objective defensively was to stop their QB. We didn’t do that. We hit him many times, but he always got rid of the ball and made plays when he had to.We made some mistakes on defensive assignments, but overall played ok.”
Arkadelphia lost 48-19 to the Malvern Leopards last week, but Campbell said it’s not about the Badgers. It’s about what the Yellowjackets do.
“This Friday is Arkadelphia, which will be much more talented than Harrison was with their skill players,” he said. “But it’s not about the other team. It is about Sheridan and what we will do and how we will react.”Â
“Adversity brings out the best in good people,” Campbell said. I believe that. And, I think we have good people on this team.
“It’s time to put on our hard hat, grab our lunch box and go to work. There is a lot of season left.”Â
