Sport Shop eliminated from district tournament
The Benton Sport Shop Junior American Legion team was eliminated from the district tournament in Sheridan with back-to-back losses to Little Rock Blue and the Genoa Dragons.
Against LR Blue, Benton scored two runs in the second and one in the third but lost 6-3 as Little Rock scored five of their runs in the first inning and a run in the fourth.
In the second inning, Benton’s Holt Fulcher was hit by a pitch to lead off. Cody Fortner followe with a single and with one out, Chris Hamilton reached on a bunt for a hit. With two outs, Tyler Turbyfill and Tyler Massey reached on back-to-back walks. A strikeout ended the inning.
Jay Davies pitched three and two thirds, allowing five hits with seven walks and two strikeouts. Ian Allred went 1 1/3 inning, allowing a hit and two walks. Michael Higginbotham pitched one inning and struck out two.
Benton had three runs on four hits and Blue had six runs on six hits with no errors.
Against the Genoa Dragons, Sport Shop lost 20-3 as Genoa scored nine runs in the first, seven in the fourth and two in the second and third innings. Genoa has 20 runs on seven hits.
Benton scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fourth. They had three runs on six hits with three errors.
In the fourth, Higginbotham singled and Fortner followed with a double. A double by Aaron Gagen plated two runs and with one out Davies reached on a walk. A fielder’s choice and a caught stealing ended the inning.
Matt Mitchell began the game but went just one third of an inning, allowing two hits and three walks and hit a batter. Fulcher finished the inning, but allowed two walks, a hit and hit a batter.
Alex Wilcox pitched two innings, allowing three hits, three walks, a hit batsman, and one strikeout. Jacob Pinkerton pitched one inning, and allowed three walks with a hit. Higginbotham also pitched one inning.
